Yes, it is an equation... no argument. What I mean is that peak horsepower gives a general indication of expected performance. Of course, you're right, the powerband graph is more indicative of actual on-road performance.

RE: Type R... it's hard to find such a car because of the variance of power, displacement and weight. But given a 200 hp, 200 ft-lb car versus a 200 hp, 140 ft lb car, given the same weight, drivetrain, etcetera, the car with more torque will usually be a bit faster.
