Need your expert recommendations. I got a problem with my FM. Medyo mausok pag arangkada. Tumaas FC ko. And pansin ko low power. I had it check sa BETAN CALIBRATION just early this morning. Eto findings:

    1. Mausok kapag inapakan gas pedal
    2. Tinanggal nila turbo/intercooler hose, inapakan ulet gas pedal, malaki nabawas sa black smoke. Almost nawala except kapag flooring na pedal talaga.
    3. May oil na yung paligid mg turbo hose to intercooler.

Job repairs needed as per mechanic:

    1. Checking of nozzle tips (replace/recondition as needed)
10.7K - Labor and replace with new nozzle tips ; or
5.8K - if Labor and calibration of nozzle tips only

    2. Turbocharger assy reconditioning - 20K estimate (depende daw sa sira. pwede pa magbago price); or
    - 35K for new

All with 6months warranty on parts and labor.....

I think the checking of nozzle tips is fair enough since matagal na din naman yung FM. But yung turbo, I am not sure kung may mas mura pa dito na makukuhanan ng parts or shop for repair.

Your comments will be greatly appreciated.....Kung sino man may experience na on repairing turbos ng FM naten at nozzle tips..

    thanks
Just had a 2nd opinion at Central Diesel. Iba naman ang diagnosis:

    1. They removed the air filter then tried to floor the pedal. Medyo mausok but not as bad as before. They are now asking me to replace first air filter with OEM (Do I really need to buy OEM?)

    2. If not resolved by this, they will calibrate nozzle
    3. Turbo is not a problem daw in my case. Kasi hoses are expanding on revolutions. Meaning daw may malakas na hangin from the turbo.
    4. Oil at turbo hoses is normal daw.
    5. Prices are really much cheaper compared to BETAN
    - 7K for calibration/replacement of nozzle
    - 13K for repair of turbo

    My observation:

BETAN wants me to go repair turbo immediately and go Nozzle calibration. Compared to Central Diesel isolating turbo is ok, oil around hoses is normal, then change filter and clean exhaust pipe first. I'll do this early tom.

My question is, need ba talaga na ORIGINAL air filter? or replacements will do? And how long dapat bago palitan ang air filter?

Your comments will be greatly appreciated again.

    Thanks

Likewise, try cleaning your tail pipe with soap and water. Baka yong smoke (when you floor the pedal and removed the hose) were just the old old carbon deposits sa tail pipe. Always did this before smoke-test, my last reading reading was .19 for a 1999 model FM suggestion lang at least this will not cost a fortune.

For me I think small oil around the turbo and intercooler hoses is normal, baka ok pa ang turbo mo. maybe you just need to replace hose clamp or hose.

    thanks paps....will try this....

Why don't you go sir with K&N? It's better than the OEM filter and lasts longer.

Sir how long will it take sa calibration? kaya ba within 1 day? included na sa 7K yung nozzle replacement?

I wasnt able to ask the duration. BUt most shops na napagtanungan ko, 3-4 hours lang daw naman ito as long as naka-schedule. included sa 7K ang nozzle replacement, zexel brand....

How long ba need to change the filter? kung madalas kasi like every 3 months, I am thinking of replacement lang sana. Aside from K&N, need ba talaga na OEM pa? or replacement filter will do the job din?

I think air filters should be replaced every 20K. I'm not sure about the difference between OEM and replacement filters because we've been using K&N for years now.

    Update:
Replaced air filter then cleaned-up exhaust carbons....

    Results:

No more black smoke on high revs...Power is back. Turbo is kicking-in as well.

    I also cleaned-up the intercooler & hoses....

    Now under monitoring.....

    ar24458,

Good you went in for a second opinion. The turbo of the 4m40 rarely conks out. And if it does usually sa high mileage rigs. I use K&N air filters for all my rigs. It's value for money in the long run. All I do is re-charge it everytime I change oil. I feel the engine breathes more freely as well with the K&N.

Could just be the glow plugs. Medyo matagal ba redondo ng engine when you start it in the morning?

They are right. Meron sa casa or El Dorado. I've changed the one on my Gen 2.5 recently. Kaso natatamaan ng driver ng chamois yung corner when he cleans the car...ayon slightly naka angat ulit yung plate. Kainis.

I use a drop in K&N Filter. So it fits perfectly in the OEM air filter box/tube. Part no is 38-9207. Get it in the US if you can. A lot cheaper.

Check the archived section at may picture doon.

    Thanks for this info...

Ano ba recommended? drop-in or yung may separate tubing parang wala na yung black box? parang mas makakahigop ng air kung naka exposed na....just my newbie idea....

anong turbo timer gamit nyo sa FM naten? I'm eyeing Apexi since very small lang.

    Its really up to you.

I went for the drop in since its the easiest route...just drop in the new K&N filter. My rig's engine is bone stock. A simple drop in filter will do the job.

I got the K&N drop in filter from the US. Think I only paid around US $60 for it, even less. You'd also need the re-charger kit. Not sure know how much I got it for. Keep in mind na medyo mahirap maka bili dito ng drop in K&N filter for our Gen 2.5's.

Have not used BFG's on my rigs. Couple of my friends have tried them. They swear by it. Medyo may kamahalan nga lang and nowadays quite hard to find a tire store/dealer that carries BFG's.

If you stay with the AT you'd be fine with road noise.
