True. This year, yung mga hidden geniuses na super galing pag sineryoso ang entrance exam but so-so acads, hindi nakapasok. And super advantage ang top private schools for the calibration of entrance exams.

Malas for this batch of students but hopefully we go back to the entrance exam system for succeeding years.

Agree on the entrance exams pero di pa rin naman nawala yung thrill waiting for the results. Ramdam ko thrill and excitement ng 2 anak ko, one for college and the other for senior high school.

I think a lot of schools went that route this year. Yung Pisay also did the same, employing an algorithm w/c heavily takes into account school reputation/ranking. Biased sa well-known/NCR elementary schools or even Philippine schools. My cousin's son grew up abroad and despite showing excellent grades got waitlisted because he went to a Japanese elementary school.

Thats what the traditional UPCAT was supposed to address, to weed out the smart (actual UPCAT), from the merely studious (HS grades). The HS grades gauges your suitability for your planned course, and the UPCAT the predicted grade of your first 2 semesters in UP (see if you will survive).

I'm guessing maraming mawawala after one year.

Kelan ba lalabas results sa UP?

Puwede naman tulad nung SAT sa US tapos bawat school mayrun specific scores as baseline for incoming students.

Dapat nga standard. Like yung NCAE dati parang wala namang effect sa pagpasok sa college. I don't remember how it was as an exam, but I remember it ranks the HS students in percentiles for the different fields

Conceptual-wise, the best exam i took was for the DOST scholarship, pero wala siyang essay part . Worse is the one i took in my eventual alma mater. I remember I tried to rush it in an attempt to flunk it (I already passed UPCAT), but I still passed with scholarship. It's not bragging, that is just how bad it was LOL

So did you get the DOST scholarship? Kung DOST scholar ka, free yung tuition sa UP.

Around mid-June. Yup down the drain na reservation fee just to get a sure slot, unless you really wanna risk UP or nothing.

Pretty douchey move from the schools but it is what it is.

Thats was the NCEE/NSAT. There was a percentile that says whether you are eligible for college or go to a vocational school. In the mid-90s they abolished it as a requirement for college so everyone now has a shot at a 4-year course. My batch was the last to take it as a requirement.

I took the NCAE (National Career Assessment Exam) in my last year of HS. yun nga pero wala na siyang effect sa college admission.

Really? Ang benefits ko lang as DOST scholar was 6K for tuition (increased to 8K after sometime), Book Allowance, and 4K (or 6K, cant remember) monthly allowance. Is it different for UP students?

Alam ko free na ngayon ang tuition sa UP for everyone (you still have to pay miscellaneous and lab fees). But DOST-scholars do get free tution back then (as is the nature of scholarships).

Back in the 90s, DOST scholars get free tuition from UP plus the usual allowances. There seems to be an agreement between the UP system and DOST-SEI.

Huh baka nagbago na samin. We weren't informed of a different set-up for UP. Medyo hasel yung amin since deduction lang na 6K from tuition ang bigay. still had to rely on academic scholarship sa school (which was rare). Buti nalang I was offered another scholarship in my 3rd year. Laking tulong

My wife was also a DOST scholar. Fully paid tuition niya in UP plus allowance pa of roughly 1.5k/month. I think we’re roughly the same age so the same policy would’ve applied to you as well.

If di ka tumuloy sa UP, where did you go to college? If you don’t mind me asking.

yeah probably then. Now I think a lot of schools are catching up fast. University of Baguio and University of the Cordilleras have been investing so much to upgrade their facilities these past few years hehe

Unfortunately the job market is still pretty bleak in Region 1/CAR. Most jobs in Baguio are either call center or TI. Most people I know who were from Baguio but are well educated have already moved to Manila for better opportunities.

Very true. As much as I'd like to stay there and work, there are really no opportunities I can get that are on par with my current occupation.

Nag-shed pa ng manpower ang TI and Moog recently.

Does school really matter?
