you can't really compare the old mazdas with the new ones.
but, we've already had our mazda for over 7 years already. and it has done good IMO. though at this age (as all cars are), minor problems are starting to show up.

Mazda 3 S offers BMW-style pleasure for lots less money

Would you dare to compare a Mazda with a BMW?
You might if you spent some time with the new Mazda 3 -- whose similarity in name to BMW's 3-Series further encourages comparison.
For sure, a BMW 328 offers 20 more hp., more torque, rear-wheel drive and many more amenities. Not to mention the cachet and standard safety features that come with a BMW.
But the "S" version of the new Mazda 3 Series that I sampled offers nearly as much fun behind the wheel -- for about $12,000 less. Handling is surefooted, steering is precise, braking is excellent and, overall, the driving is a pleasure. Zoom zoom.
Whether or not it lures many BMW intenders, this new Mazda seems likely to be a hit with the young tuner crowd -- for its zip, its poise, its aggressive looks and its potential. Its muscular looks, with sheet metal seemingly stretched tight over frame and wheels, reminded me of a BMW as much as the 3's performance and its no-nonsense cockpit.
'04 Mazda 3 S 5-Door
Engine: 160-hp., 2.3-liter four-cylinder.
Transmission: Five-speed manual, front-wheel drive.
Safety: Dual air bags, 4-wheel disc brakes; anti-whiplash front seats; shoulder belts for five passengers.
Place of assembly: Hiroshima, Japan.
Weight: 2,826 pounds.
Cargo room: (rear seatbacks up/folded, cu. ft.) 17.1/31.2.
EPA mileage rating: 25 mpg city, 32 highway.
Price as driven: $18,305, with freight.
Some people, though, might think the Mazda looks too much like a station wagon.
The S comes with a 160- hp., 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that offers stirring performance, a sweet exhaust tone and good fuel economy. Mazda says its electric, rather than engine- driven, power-steering system aids in the latter.
Testers for PBS TV's MotorWeek reported zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds with a stick shift. There is almost no "torque steer" in quick launches.
Replacing the Protege and on sale since December, the 3 is at least six inches longer than its predecessors, depending on specific variant.
The 3 line begins at about $14,000 for the "i" four-door sedan with a less potent 2.0- liter engine delivering 148 hp. It's a Mazda engine.
A more expensive four- door sedan, called "S" comes with the same 2.3-liter four as the five-door S that I tested. It begins at a little less than $17,000.
Designed by Mazda, this engine is used also in the larger Mazda 6 and other products of the Ford Motor Co. family. In fact, the 3 is structurally related to the Volvo S40 and the European version of the Focus.
All variants are available with a four-speed automatic transmission. Mazda claims all versions ride better than their predecessors and have more rigid bodies.
All variants get four-wheel disc brakes as well, although the rotors on "S" versions are larger. Antilock is optional, packaged for $800 with side- impact air bags up front and side curtain air bags covering front and rear seaters. If you buy any option package, buy this one; those air bags could save your life.
The tester, stickering at a very reasonable $18,305, included a slick-shifting five-speed stick.
Mazda says the 2.3-liter engine has variable valve timing and a timing chain that will never need replacement.
Although the "S" versions of the 3 perform alike, the five-door comes standard with a "sport" package with unique front and rear bumpers and other aesthetic touches.
The package is optional in S sedans.
In any version, the 3's Mazda's seating position is relatively high, improving the view forward and easing entry and exit.
Unusual standard features in all versions include a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. An unusual option in this price range is leather upholstery.
In the sedan and five-door, rear seatbacks fold down to increase cargo room.
Mazda claims the large glovebox will hold a laptop computer.
One minor complaint inside from this driver: The backlighting for the otherwise fine analog gauges with red numerals is too dim for driving at dusk.
There are no ratings yet for quality and customer service for the Mazda 3.
Although Mazda ranked below average in J.D. Power and Associates' latest survey of customer satisfaction in the first three years of ownership, Consumer Reports deems Mazda's larger 6 model, its Miata roadster and its MPV van above average in reliability, based on the magazine's annual reader surveys.
Mazda's pickup truck and Tribute SUV are termed average.
Competitors worth considering in the 3's price neighborhood include the Ford Focus ZX4 ST ($18,250 to start), which is a four-door sedan. It has the same 2.3-liter engine, though it delivers only 154 hp. in the Ford.
Although underappreciated by New Yorkers wed to their Hondas and Toyotas, the Focus is a good performer worth considering.
Honda's Civic Si also plays in this arena, with 160 hp. under the hood but it's a two-door.
However, if a two-door car will suit you, Saturn's Ion Redline is worth considering, for about $21,000 with 205 hp.
The Dodge Neon, slightly smaller than the new 3, is available with as much as 230 hp. in the SRT-4 version, starting just under $20,000.
And Nissan's Sentra SER Spec V sedan offers 175 hp. for under $18,000.
A final note: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave a 3 sedan a good, but not perfect, rating (four out of five stars) for the car's frontal crash test performance and a mediocre (three out of five star) rating for its side-impact protection.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety isn't yet offering an assessment of the 3.
