Driving to Baguio at Midnight

Driving to Baguio is on my bucket list. It's just that I have this phobia of getting lost, especially when I'm driving alone. Haha.

I have driven to Baguio and back to Manila by myself and it was lots of fun. As in leave for Baguio in the morning and back in Manila by early evening. I just stopped in Starbuck's Camp John Hay for a couple of corned beef pandesals and coffee.

I did get lost at one part but it was my fault by missing a certain left turn (it was marked with a sign but I missed it somehow).

Best to do it during off-season so traffic would be a bit less than during peak holiday times.

Six adults? Kinda crowded unless the sixth person rides in the trunk.

Anyway, I think you can do it in 50 to 60 liters of fuel if you drive conservatively on the level portions.

Budget around 2-3 full tanks worth.

Is it safe to carry that much people inside a Vios? If you're tight, you can consider sending some passengers via Victory Liner tapos sa Baguio na kayo mag overloading.

Same here. Kennon should be fine. I'm thinking more about the status of the roadworks in Pangasinan.

Last time I went there was Dec 1. From NLEX, take SCTEX and TPLEX. Exit TPLEX in Pura, and follow the signs going out to the National Highway. TPLEX was still free when I used it (no toll). The roads in Tarlac and Pangasinan are still being widened, so expect sporadic stops as sometimes only one lane is passable. The town of Villasis has the worst road conditons (still unfinished roadworks). If you can by-pass that or travel at night time, much better.

A Vios (1.3) carrying 6 adults and luggage will use up about 30 liters of fuel one way. Don't be surprised, that's a lot of weight for a small engine to lug along. Be sure to gas up in Rosario town or Sison, if possible full tank again. Gas prices in Baguio are very expensive.

Kennon is being widened in some portions and should be okay to take when its not raining (*******ial downpour). Marcos highway sees a lot of traffic since large buses and truck/trailers are prohibited from using Kennon.

One thing that gets me to do those trips is when i have a nice, fun car at my disposal.

True.... the real reason why I did it was because I had my project car with me. Fun & fast to drive. I just had to refuel twice during the entire drive.

If ever my plan to drive to Baguio pans out, I will have to do something else, most likely climb Mt. Pulag. I'm about to complete the upgrade of my engine bay's innards and hopefully, I can test it soon.

Have been to Baguio for the past 3 weekends, i just got back last Sunday evening ( as the last).

Road condition is good from NLEX, better at SCTEX, and best at TPLEX ( no speed limit yet, i think, and free). McArthur potion of Tarlac is fast until you reach Rosales, traffic is moderate from Villasis until you pass Urdaneta. From The towns of Binalonan, Pozzorubio and Sison, expect stop and go traffic as there are roadworks. Kennon is fine except for a few meters ( around 50 meters) of one way traffic.

For the past 3 weekends, my average travel time using a van is around 4 hours and 50 minutes, with two pee/ yosi breaks of 10 minutes each.

Just up to the city sir. I only have a 4x2. Will rent a jeep going to the Ranger Station.

December is a perfect time to see a sea of clouds on the summit.

Before, i used to go the entire trip without gassing up until i'm near Manila already. I stopped that habit though as it's better to always have the extra gas in the tank.

Was just checking waze as a friend complained of traffic in the La Union area where the roadworks are. Cause of traffic: counterflowing idiots.

Just got back from Baguio and yeah, matraffic sa La Union, especially sa boundary ng La Union at Sison, Pangasinan (yun sa may tulay). Sa waze, di ko siya nakita while traveling kasi walang signal ng Globe.

Here's my tip if you're going to Baguio...

Leave as early as possible. 4am is an ideal time to leave. Then after TPLEX, exit at Pura/Gerona then TURN RIGHT to go to Magilas Trail. If you're using Waze, ituturo ng Waze yun papuntang McArthur, which is dapat iwasan. Magilas Trail has good roads, lalo sa may bypass ng Asingan. Then stop by Asingan (after the long bridge) if you want. Corn season nila ngayon kasi pero they sell white corn. Also, may mga naturally fermented vinegar sila na binebenta.

Then follow Magilas Trail up to Binalonan, then exit at McArthur Highway. Panira lang talaga yun roadworks from there up to Sison. From Sison all the way to the road going up to Kennon is ok naman and gas up before going up. Badtrip lang nanay ko at ayaw ng Kennon Road kasi natatakot. Wala naman traffic masyado pagdating ng Baguio.

Yep, on waze. I saw a post by a friend on FB that traffic was bad so i checked it out on waze to see what it was all about. The usual counterflow a-holes.

For one who goes during the day, is it okay to avoid the Sison to Rosario stretch by going around Manaoag - Mangaldan - San Fabian? People are a-bitchin on waze right now about the traffic at the roadworks section.

IMO, not worth the re-route as you will encounter a lot of tricycles there. Sison to Rosario is just a short distance, so i think just bring a couple of more patience and you will be fine.

Actually i don't mind slowing down and waiting a few minutes for my turn... Dadating at dadating naman tayo. Talked to a buddy a while ago. Yung hassle daw kahapon talaga yung mga gagong nagcounterflow. People ended up waiting for over an hour because of those inconsiderate gasholes.
