Hi leolop. The technician at Kia Dagupan's newly-opened service center said that the cable was only made out of zinc, which I presume means that the metal is of lower quality than, say, galvanized iron (?).
Anyway, my van is already 5 years old, but I must confess that I have this obsessive-compulsive habit of tugging on the parking brake release lever a second time after I release the brake, just to make sure it has disengaged completely. In other words, I have probably subjected that cable to 10 years worth of tugging by the time it snapped
No word yet on how much the replacement costs, as Kia Dagupan still has to order the part from their sister company, Kia Pampanga. As of now, they only stock parts needed for regular PMS work.
The good news is that the technician showed me how to deactivate the parking brake manually by pulling a lever underneath the dash, where the cable is connected. When i got home, I rigged a makeshift cable using GI wire (alambre), which I connected to this lever. Now I can use my parking brake while I'm waiting for the part to arrive.

Just an update: The parking brake release cable costs P500. I have to make a downpayment today, after which Kia Pangasinan will order the part from their mother company, Kia Pampanga.
Maswerte pa kayong nasa Metro Manila, di nyo kailangan dumaan sa ganitong hassle para lang makakuha ng piyesa, kahit sa Banawe meron.

July 26th, 2007 07:14 AM #1828good mornings guys!
after lurking for so long in this thread i am finally about to be an official carnival owner. the unit is 2000 ls and has 117k mileage but its casa-maintained and the owner claims that the high mileage is due to frequent out of town trips (he has business in subic but he lives in metro manila).
i am almost certain to take it, high mileage notwithstanding, as according to some regulars here, their unit has accumulated as high as 300k and it is still serving them well. besides, i've seen other units with just half the mileage but in a lot worse condition.
so unless something comes up or some of you can convince me to look for another, i will be closing the deal tomorrow. wish me luck!
this thread and you people have been a lot of help, thanks!

ECAT stands for electronically controlled automatic transmission. It's pretty much a marketing term since almost all A/T's nowadays have electronic control units even if they don't have an adjustable/selectable switch.
What the switch basically does is adjust the shift points of the transmission. This is detailed in your owner's manual.
