I'm a newbie here and would like to seek your expertise regarding my unit Isuzu Hilander SL '97 with isuzu 4ja1 engine.
    These are my issues:
    A. Black smoke comes out in first few seconds upon engine start-up and followed by too much smoke (white to grayish white) during engine running idle but reduces when engine is hot.
    B. Along with the smoke is a strong smell of which I think unburnt diesel.[/B]

What do you think are the possible culprit? Other conditions listed below for your reference if anyone can help me troubleshoot my problem.
    1. Odometer reading 95,000+; i'm not sure if it wasn't tweaked by previous owner.
    2. Doesn't eat up oil I guess 'coz I rarely consumed 500ml oil for top-up in between oil change.
    3. Replaced fuel filter and cleaned water separator.
    4. Replaced air filter with the L200 cartridge. Logically, I found it less restrictive in terms of air flow since it fully perforated all around allowing more air with less restriction. Unlike air filter intended for 4ja1 which is half mask perforated cartridge.
    5. Checked nozzle tips opening pressure and witnessed it still opens at required opening pressure based on 4ja1 manual. Though, one nozzle found to have not spraying the correct pattern so it was dismantled and cleaned, fortunately the spray went okay as others.
    6. Used biodiesel on several full tanks with recommended mixture specified on the bottle, MC55. Even used it twice 100% biodiesel feed directly to injection pump (supply/return) until 1 liter of it consumes and rev the engine at several RPM's on two separate occasions.
    7. Check valve clearance in cold condition at 0.014 inch as specified on the manual.
    8. Opened oil filler cap and oil dipstick while engine running but no oil spitting observed not unless if I rev the engine.
    9. Average km/Li: Hiway = 14, City = 10, Mixed = 12. A/C on.
    10. Regularly flushed-out carbon from exhaust pipe with soap and water.
    11. Oil changed: every 5,000 km or 6mos. with minimum required SAE40 or 15W-40 oil, CD to CI grade shell or petron.
    12. Only light to moderate driving conditions mostly 60% hiway and 40% city
    13. One click start even on cold and rainy days.
    14. No significant loss of power detected, pick-up is still still okay even if fully loaded.
    15. No heavy smoke on high RPM's not unless if uphill and within wrong range of speed and rpm.
    14. Even run the engine with no air filter, still the annoying smoke persists.
    15. Definitely not blown head gasket I think 'coz I rarely top-up coolant on my radiator. Also, no milky residue or oil presence on radiator cap and no significant air bubbles observed with engine is running.

With all these things I've done so far, do you think guys something I missed? Or do I really need to check / service my injection pump?

Thank you very much to all and more power!
about sa smoke sir try nyo po pa bugahan ng tubig ang exhaust pipe nyo sa mga carwash, bale ganito po ang gagawin.....1st is pabugahan mo ng tubig ang exhaust while engine is off.....after 20sec...na buga....turn engine on tapos rev nyo po ng malakas para lumabas mga tubig may kasamang carbon deposits.....repeat hanggang malinis na ang buga....yan po ina advice sa mga failed ang emession test... and it works

    Hello sir Jims2x,

Actually, yun din yung ginagawa ko or mas grabe pa kasi po nilagyan ko yung yung exhasut pipe ko right after sa exhaust manifold ng B.I. pipe provision for washing the exhaust pipe with water. Binababad ko po yun ng powder soap or liquid soap or minsan diswashing soap tsaka turn-on the engine and rev hard! Problem ko po hindi itim na usok, bluish-white na usok na mabahong amoy po during start-ups, idle and accleration while engine still not in normal operating temperature.

    Tyvm.

well, kelangan mo ng magpa linis ng nozzle that feed fuel inside the combustion chamber bro...kaya mausok na yan,and white smoke kamo kasi barado na ng carbon yung mga nozzle mo....mura lang yun sa mga calibration shop..pag nagpagawa ako,200 pesos lang sa trusted kong talyer, apat na nozzle na yun...

For me,the 4JA1 engine is simply perfect and reliable...mag 100,000kms na yung sportivo ko,pero wala pa akong problema sa makina....palibhasa,I know how to maintain the engine...ang sekreto ko,alaga lang sa langis, andyan kasi ang buhay ng sasakyan....and dont put gear oil sa transmission ng crosswind, kungdi same engine oil din na nilalagay nyo sa main engine nyo...and the best for me is Shell Helix super Ultra Diesel, for 4 litres,it cost only 700+php....

sa clutch, kung matigas na,ipa bleed nyo na yung fluid, isabay nyo na din yung sa break.....

napakadaling i maintain ng crosswind, compare sa ibang sasakyan...if you know how...

Actually, done that also sir yung pa-check ng opening pressure, spray pattern at cleaning the 4-nozzles. All passed within the 185kg/cm2 opening pressure. spray pattern also in well distributed fine mist spray on all 4-orifices.
Totoo po yun, ang 4ja1 engine natin ay ang pinaka tipid sa lahat ng diesel engine in terms of engine oil and fuel economy compared with its counterpart belonging on the same engine displacement.
From toyota 2L, mazda B2500, Mitsu 4D56 lahat po ay around 6Litters ang engine oil while 4JA1's only 4~4.5 Liters. Laking tipid talaga.

To be accurate, it should really be 4.5L.

Mga sir, ask ko lang po if ano ang mga possible problems pag medyo noticable yung shaking sa engine? Minsan po kasi naabot sa steering wheel yung pagshake or vibrate... Is this normal? TIA :-)

4JA1 Engine, Are there any problems?
