MANILA, Philippines — Odd as it may seem but Vice President Jejomar C. Binay gets some sense of self-fulfillment in going to wakes after visiting more than 60,000 of them from 1986 to 2010.
Now the second most powerful man in the country, Binay said he still finds time going to wakes, mostly of Makati residents.
“Last night, I went to the wakes of my former teacher, of a former barangay captain who is a friend of mine, and of a Makati resident,” Binay said in an interview.
He developed the habit when he was mayor of Makati City for more than two decades.
Binay said that on average, he went to eight wakes in Makati every day of the week.
He said this translates to more than 60,000 wakes visited from 1986 to 2010.
Sometimes, he visits as much as 23 wakes a day, Binay said.
“When you go to a wake, you come at the right time and at the right place as I had always been saying. Somehow you need some moral support and some help financially," Binay said in Filipino.
