News reports are not null. If an authorized executive of the newspaper can testify in court that the report did appear in the newspaper, then it can be taken cognizance of in court. Also, the reporter can be summoned as a witness to affirm his story.
True. But the probative value of the testimony of the news executive/reporter would be limited to the fact that such news article or report appeared in their paper or program. My knowledge on the rules of evidence is a little rusty, but, anything further than that (i.e. identity of the suspect, weapon used, etc.) would be considered hearsay unless the executive/reporter has personal knowledge of the crime or incident.

^^ Hehehehe. Baka kung ganun bumagsak ang criminal rate. Lahat ng may masasamang loob, nanginginig na ang tuhod. hehehe.

Tapang din nung owner ah. Nakipagbarilan siya with his wife near him. Sana, naisip niya din kaligtasan ng asawa niya bago marekober ang sasakyan niya.

Pero still. kudos to him.

Here's another version to the story, may konti lang pagkaka-iba:

Businessman kills one of 2 car thieves in shootout
By Nancy C. Carvajal
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Filed Under: Police, Car Theft, Crime
A businessman shot it out with two men who took his sport utility vehicle, killing one of them on Monday night in Quezon City.

Supt. Lino Banaag, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD-CIDU), said Jeffrey Atanacio, 38, also recovered his Ford Explorer.

“He was with a friend and her two kids so he yielded the SUV first and fired at the car jackers as they were driving away, killing one of the suspects on the spot and at the same time recovering his stolen vehicle,” Banaag said.

Slain thief identified

He identified the slain car thief as Redentor Fajardo, 39, a resident of Baliuag, Bulacan, based on the documents and driver’s license found in his wallet.

Banaag said they also found in Fajardo’s possession a 9 mm pistol, three loaded pistol clips, two cell phones and a two-way radio.

A check of the documents found in the slain car thief’s jacket showed that he was a former barangay councilor and had a permit to carry a firearm.

The police said the car jacking took place after Atanacio and his companions arrived at a house on Sta. Catalina Street in Barangay St. Peter at 10:30 p.m. on Monday.

As the trader was parking his Explorer in the garage, two armed men appeared and demanded the keys to the vehicle.

At the same time, they ordered everyone in the vehicle to get out.

Atanacio told the police that as he and his companions were getting out of the SUV, one of them discreetly handed to him his clutch bag which contained his gun.

He added that he waited until the two men got into his vehicle and started to drive away. He then fired at them, hitting Fajardo who was driving.

After he was hit, Fajardo lost control of the Explorer which slammed into an electrical post at the corner of Sta. Catalina and Cordillera Streets.

His cohort immediately ran out of the vehicle while firing back at Atanacio.

At this point, a Toyota Fortuner drove by and stopped to pick up the other car jacker.

“The suspects fled the area on board another SUV, leaving their fallen companion,” the police said.

Story adds a bit more dimension.

He kept cool as others were present. Also, the getaway Fortuner and ex-Baranggay Councilor aspect make it interesting.

Was it an Isuzu Fortuner?

Maybe not, carnapping is bailable while murder is not. Very few car owners own guns anyway.

Pwede namang alibi sa korte na yung sasakyan ang pinaputukan mo, para ma-disable yung gulong. Kaso pasmado yung kamay mo kaya sa windshield tumama yung bala.

Better:
You were following them so you can get your vehicle back when they started shooting at you so you had to shoot back.

You shoot to immobilize.

You shoot and continue until it is over.

I think he was trying to Immobilize his car but the carnapper died in
the process.
