haha.. Doc i have also browsed and read that article yesterday while im reading the forums in BITOG...
Doc, i have read so many UOA and VOA there,, from what i observed there is just 3 oils which is always consistently above the rest of the brands in terms of additive package, and TBN and other good stuff inside the oils
1. royal purple
2. redline
3. Mobil 1
*these three oils always had a high additive package of zinc, magnesium, calcium, moly
*they also have high TBN reserves, above 12
*And from the UOA, their TBN number don't get exhausted and used up even though you're already into the 10,000 miles range...
whats your take on these Doc?

There's lots of good oils out there, many most don't even know about and the API rating plays a bigger part then the brand of oil. Unfortunately US oil provides far less protection than the oils you can get in the Philippines. Because the over the counter oil here has to go by the latest API standard which frankly suck. Some of these literately have have the the Zinc and Phos they had just 4 years ago.
Our SN rated oils are strait garbage, most don't make up the loss of the Zn and Phos with moly or boron so your getting far less protection for your engine then you did just 4 years ago.
Those are all good oils, but there are good cheap oils too, Like ZIC synthetic is a good solid Group III oil, SK industries who makes ZIC is one of the largest producers of Group III base oils and is a major importer of Group III into the US so it's good stuff and what's in many of of our oils. But in the Philippines your not stuck with SN rated oil for the most part over the counter unless you get diesel oil.
Motul is great oil but very expensive because it's group V oil. But like I said the API rating is more important than the brand of oil for the most part.

dOC, i have many zic oils here... im retailing the ZIC products, like the zic A, zic up, zic Rv... i didn't know they were that good... i have boxes of them here, but nobody seems to like it if you sell ZIC in the market areas of forums here... seems many people are still not aware of the specifications of oils...
you're definitely right on DOc, most of the latest oils here have decreased their phosphorus and zinc additive count to meet API SN but did not formulate to increase the moly, what we end up is an oil who will favor the "catalytic converters life and emissions" but lack protection for the engine...
which will then make then engine emit more pollutants because there's no protection in the end...

Lets do some ZIC oil education. The new Yubase ZIC oils are designed to be a lower cost alternative to PAO oils (Group IV) like Mobil1, they perform on par with group IV and V oils at a lower cost. And at the price it's sold for is probably the best bang for the buck for synthetic oil you can get.
Some other info on SK industries the makers of ZIC oil and most of the oils people use.
SK lubricants’ base oil plant is the largest API Group III base oil plant in the world. SK API Group III production meets more than 60% of world's demand of this type of oil. ZIC lubricants are produced in a fully automatic computerized PLC plant.
There new yubase oil is Group III + that's what Mobil Delvac Super is made of.

B&N Base Oils
SK lubricants and SK Techno-lube launches high-quality lubricants for advanced cars made from Yubase. VHVI Base Oil..... | Base Oil Report
SK Lubricants is not a small company brewing oil from some tiny factory.
SK Lubricants posted a 94.5 billion South Korean won (U.S. $84.6 million) operating profit for the fourth quarter, up 25 percent from the year-earlier period. For the full fiscal year 2011, SK Lubricants totaled 510.9 billion won in operating income, up 71 percent from 298.6 billion won for 2010.
Sales of 735.1 billion won for the quarter were up 37.5 percent from the previous year’s fourth quarter. Total revenue for SK Lubricants reached 2.7 trillion won for 2011, up 35 percent from 2010.
Parent company SK Innovation reported a 24 percent fourth quarter revenue increase over the previous quarter, recording 17 trillion won. However, the company’s fourth-quarter net profit dropped 15 percent from the previous year due to a drop in refining margins and lackluster petrochemical product spreads.
SK’s Sungkeum Cha, head of corporate support, said, “SK Innovation showed considerable growth in revenue during the fourth quarter because of the rise in oil price, while operating profit decreased due to the drop in refining margin and weak product spreads in the petrochemical business.”
The company said it is continuing its mid and long-term expansion strategies to become both a domestic and global industry leader.
SK operates a 21,000 barrel per day Group II and Group III base oil refinery in Ulsan, South Korea, with API Group II and Group III. The SK-Pertamina joint venture plant in Dumai, Indonesia, which is 65 percent owned by SK, has about 7,000 b/d of Group III capacity.
SK Lubricants is partnering with Repsol YPF on a new 13,000 b/d Group II/III base oil plant at Repsol’s Cartagena, Spain refinery. It is scheduled to begin production in 2014.
SK Innovation and JX Nippon Oil & Energy in August 2011 announced a joint venture to build a base oil plant at SK’s Ulsan, South Korea complex. About 550,000 metric tons per year of Group III base oil capacity is expected to be on stream from June 2012, with an additional 580,000 tons per year of Group II capacity projected for 2013.
S-Oil
S-Oil reported fourth-quarter revenue of 659 billion won (U.S. $590 million) for its lube segment, a 27.4 percent increase over the previous year’s fourth quarter revenue of 517 billion won. For all of 2011, revenue was 2.5 trillion won, a 56 percent increase over 2010’s total of 1.6 trillion won.
Operating income for the quarter was 189 billion won, a 55.5 percent increase over the previous fourth quarter revenue of 121.7 billion won. For the year, the company reported annual operating income of 717 billion won, a 102 percent increase over 2010’s 355.5 billion won.
In its earnings presentation, S-Oil said it expects the lube market to rebound towards the latter part of 2012, projecting that gradual demand growth will absorb the impact of sizable capacity expansions in the Middle East and Korea.
S-Oil’s Onsan, South Korea, refinery has 10,000 b/d Group III capacity, in addition to 20,500 b/d of Group II and 500 b/d of Group I capacity.

I would lean more towards technological solutions instead of deputized traffic wardens, whenever...
