Change it once a year. What is your car?

wala usok last time. dahil nakita namin na wala palang air filter (butas na un air filter filament) kaya binilhan namin ng air filter.
tapos nagkaron na sir ng usok.

Too rich setting for the full load adjustment screw? Probably was adjusted previously to compensate for the free flowing (butas) intake.

not sure kase 2nd hand po namin ito nakuha... napansin lang namin na butas pala un air filter nang binuksan na totally ang air filter because it was a tight fit at the hood. the end part was ripped and was open. visual pag angat mo sir ng cover walang punit and medyo malinis.. pero nang alisin na nakita namin na ganon na nga. never been to a calibration center. sir DD, please PM me your center to have our van check totally. TIA.

Full load adjustment is done during pump calibration, and should not be adjusted on-engine. The adjusting screw is sealed to prevent tampering.

    Hi DD,

Have not posted here in a while but I'm still following this thread for tips and tricks. I just want to get your opinion regarding my innova d4d. Has yet to reach 35K km but had my PMS prior to reaching 34K km on the odo and this is about 2 to 3 weeks ago. Had the usual change of oil, oil filter and fuel filter element and casa recommended changing the air filter because of the excessive accumulation of soot and dust, so I did. Note this is the second air filter change as I had the first one around 18 to 19K km. The issue is not after this PMS but before that. Several instances before i decided to have the PMS, I would notice that during early morning start (from not being used in 3 to 4 days), there is a very faint engine hunt that is actually unnoticeable on the tach needle, though I can feel it quite well based on the engine sound. This engine hunt was gone after the PMS was done. My question is, is the hunting caused by a clogged air filter OR clogged fuel filter? Note that I change my fuel filter element every 5K km along with the oil change. Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post. Will appreciate your response.

This is the first time I hear about this condition.....so I can't give an opinion. Offhand, I don't think hunting was due to clogged fuel/air filters.

It would be good if you can ask your Toyota service advisor about this and share your discussion on this thread.

    Hi DD,

Thank you for your honest opinion. The thing is I have not experienced this slight hunting after the PMS and hopefully I don't experience this again. In our dealings with Cat Engines, clogged fuel filters rather than air filters, will most likely produce hunting on an engine. My doubts on this as the cause for my engine is because of the fact that I change the fuel filter more or earlier than the recommended/estimated filter change interval. Anyhow, will share any opinions that casa will have once I get to visit them.

    Dear timo07:

Here's a wild guess, could it be that since the injection system is electronically controlled, that changing air flows created by a clogged filter would cause unstable air readings and cause the electronic engine control to vary the fuel delivery to match this?

Or it could just be haunted (joke).

    Dear Dieseldude:

Lately I replaced my fuel filter and cleaned out the wire-mesh strainer that protects the injection pump.

The vehicle is a Mazda B2500 with a WL-31 naturally-aspirated diesel with a license-built version of the Bosch VE distributor type injection pump.

To prime the pump I used a syringe to squirt diesel fuel down the fuel hose leading to the banjo-bolt fuel line fitting on the injection pump.

The wire-mesh strainer is located just below the banjo bolt and is held down by a spring.

I thought this would fill the pump (as it is my understanding - after reading the Bosch VE injection pump manual) so that there would be no air after I purged it using the hand pump and air bleed screw on the top of the fuel filter assembly.

To my utter surprise, I couldn't fill the thing up, it would fill partially then would slowly drain away.

Since I read that the pump's internal pressure is maintained by a pressure valve, if my reading of the manual is correct, this should not happen.

Am I wrong or is there a problem with my pump? Could you explain this, please?

    Thanks a bunch,

    Best Regards,

    Dusky Lim

    Hi Dusky,

This is not normal. Diesel fuel could be leaking through the front oil seal.

Check the following for wear: front drive oil seal, drive shaft seal area, drive shaft bushing journal, drive shaft bushing.

D4Ds have a restriction sensor on the fuel filter housing. Indicator lamp on the dashboard will be continuously on if fuel filter is blocked.......time to replace fuel filter.
