I grew up with Nissans, Mitsubishis, Hondas, Toyotas... the odd BMW and Benz, and have spent considerable time overseeing the repairs or overhauling of these cars at one time or another. Bagong kotse at sira na agad ang nasa isip? Time flies and the Camry I had overhauled a couple of months ago, i still remember the day we got it delivered at home - brand spanking new. I abhorred Toyotas before because they lacked character and i would akin them to golf carts but now we choose to buy Toyotas precisely because it has lived up to what the perception is. Of course i enjoy driving other marques more but if it's daily driver where you don't want to put much thought then its always up there. Just my two cents.

BTT: The Volvos i think also suffer from the stigma that they're harder to repair or source parts as compared to the more popular Europeans like the BMW and the Benz.

The Nissan Sentra for me is also an underrated vehicle until Nissan Philippines kept extending the shelf life beyond expiry. The Ford Lynx was also one pesky bugger if i recall the reviews from ten years ago.

    ha ha.
i was surprised how that other thread just... snowballed! apparently, it seems we stumbled into fanatic territory... 'nuff said!

my vote goes to the sentra gx.. seems to be "underrated" by the private user.. is it only my perception that fleet operators and for-hires are the major users of this model? that private motorists don't seem to warm up to these... taxis?
it is a basic car... no bells and whistles... less toys, less things to go wrong in the long run (sour grapes heh heh). my cars stay with us for years.

Agree! The Volvo S60 is a very under-appreciated car. Even the entry level 2.0T is a great car to drive with a nice interior that much people overlook to consider.

We have one of the basic Sentras. It serves as the all around car, sending kids to school, going to market, etc. We even converted it to Auto-LPG on the first week we got it. It is a no frills car that is cheap to buy and cheap to run yet it has loads of space inside for passengers to be comfortable. Only complaint is the lack of power but that is what you get with a 1.3L engine in a Sentra.

Personally I don't feel its under-rated. It was good value for money during the time when we didn't have as much choices for cars. A lot of our friends and extended family bought one themselves.

The stigma with Volvo in the Philippines probably came from the original company selling them, Viking Cars which charged a lot for parts and labor and frequently only had replacement parts only on back-order.

my opinion with the europeans, is that they had quality issues with their post-purchase support.. i did not think their cars were superbly lousy, just that the mechanics and parts suppliers here were not up to stuff..

With Volvo, it's kind of true that it's hard to source parts for older units... unlike Benz or BMW, which have more specialist suppliers.

The Civic is great... though I doubt anybody under-rates it. A lot of people still think (weirdly) it's the sporty choice, when in reality, it's more like a better Corolla nowadays.

Hmmm... how many former Nissanbayan'ers are on this board?

Can you imagine, I actually have Mike Black on my FB list? I wonder sometimes if it would be possible for FB to institute a "username" system... ...I'd like mine to be... "niky"

Actually, it's also coined as "Nissan ba yan???" since Nissan was somewhat underrated before. A lot of Civic SiR drivers we're always given a run for their money in RWYB by near stock Sentras.

Mike Black also disses me on FB every now and then. He's a fisherman now (per the last time we spoke). :D

Same here. I even have his phone numbers in my phone. (but no idea if they still work since it has been years since I last talked to the guy).

Underrated din ang Toyota Hiace Commuter.

It can pull 15 pax easily with only its <100hp engine with <100 ft-lbs of torque.

Really a great people-mover sans the extravangance of the Grandia.
