Okay, so we're clear: I have no problems in people advertising their services (in fact, I encourage it for more DIY detailers) but I do have a problem with false advertising. This is why I'll take my time to type this post even if it's 3:30AM in the morning.
The best paint protection program will be one that is consistent. This is why I will always prefer a regimen over a single-use product. All these advertised "permanent" coatings may seem dazzling and present hard to swallow claims but any experienced detailer would know that defects such as swirl marks cannot be prevented by these coatings.
You can think of them as long-lasting protection sealants. But that's about it.
Most of the products are out-of-reach of the local market. Unless you're a fan of importing products, dalawa lang yun meron sa atin domestically. These is Optimum's Opticoat and 3D's NitroSeal. Once you have the ability to import, you have a ton more choices. So what are these products? The most well-known among them is Optimum's Opticoat. You could say it's the pioneer of this product line. Others include CQuartz Finest, HD NitroSeal, Wolf's Hard Body, G Guard, G Technique, etc.
Most of these products deep down just consists of silicon bonded with another molecule. Thus all of them are ceramics. Most products are of glass -- silicon dioxide.. Opti-coat is silicon carbide.. while HD NitroSeal is simply a extremely long sealant. Before people shoot out "glass" isn't a ceramic, don't.
Now the questions..
How long will it last?
It will always depend on your car care. Anything that guarantees a duration is BS. What if I have a car that's a garage queen? The other being exposed to elements 24/7? Or one that's near the sea? How do you guarantee those variables?
Besides, all protection is crap if your paint is dead. All I have to do is have 100 bird droppings land on that panel, bask it in the sun, and let's see if any of your protection will help your paint.
(!) Bird Dropping Fact: Bird droppings aren't dangerous because of a bird's uric acid thrown into its droppings but on how the droppings interact with your paint and the sun. Your problem is more of contraction and expansion of the paint molecules.
Is it scratch-proof?
No. It's scratch resistant due to a higher moss resistance level. That's all. But if a rock goes hurling at you 100km/h at SCTEX and scratches your paint. Kahit ano gawin mo, you'll still need to polish and compound to level the paint and remove that scratch.
And... kahit wala ka nilagay sa paint mo, you can still use water to clean up your paint. Who says kilangan lagi may lubricant? Hell.. I wash my car using water at times just to remove light dirt if needed. This is the tamang OC thread.. not the super-hyper-mega OC thread.
So what happens to most cars with these products after a year?
After one year, the protection is still alive and kicking. But your paint layer is scratched because meron tumagos sa protection layer mo. Congratulations! Kahit ano gawin mo, you're still going to paint correct if you want to join a car show.
The better route? In one year: do one 2/3 step detail and 3 quarters of paint protection (wax/sealants) of a durable product.

1. No product will last for 5 years guaranteed.
Kung ayaw mo maniwala, give me a sample and we'll bet 7 digits on it. Nothing like testing a couple of chemicals on it. Like I said, too many variables kasi yan. It's impossible to guarantee these variables.
2. Impossible not to have swirl marks on a daily-driven car. I know since one of our cars has Opticoat on it.
3. Gloss is the result of a prepped surface. I've never had a person correctly guess what wax or sealant I am using even if I'm using a cheap Meg' M16 or an expensive Pinnacle Souveran. As long as your paint is defect-free, it'll shine. Every thing else people worry about waxes: color depth, gloss, reflectivity, sheeting, etc. are quite subjective. My tip for people looking at waxes: ease of use, price, durability.
4. If you plan on introducing this, pay attention on pricing and preparation. Since lahat yan isa lang habol mo: a great prep. And this is where you pay the skills of the detailer. If the prep sucks, patay ka once you throw in the coating.
For everything else, autogeek has an article for coatings: How To Apply a Car Paint Coating
