precaution? hmmm. number one is bring tons of water and don't get stuck in traffic. or better yet, don't use it until you get it fixed. remember: YOUR ENGINE DETERIORATES EVERY TIME YOU OVERHEAT
(1) gaskets and seals made of rubber loosens/burns/
(2) your engine oil can get into your intake manifold
(3) you lose compression
do all of these:
check your radiator cap (if loose)
check the radiator for water
check the aux fan (if it turns on when your temp gauge is at half)
touch the top your radiator (WARNING: do this at your own risk) if the top is cold even if the temperature in your gauge is at half or more, then you have a seriously clogged cooling system.
check if there's any water leaking from your water pump (tell tale signs are the leak and the rust outside).
85k in the odo right? you're car is due for timing belt and water pump replacement. choose a good shop, these kinds of jobs are delicate.
