A/Ts have solenoids (electromechanical device) in them that control fluid flow to engage certain gears or clutch packs. Needless to say, if there's a problem with the powertrain control module (PCM-the computer that controls the A/T), or if the solenoid(s) themselves are defective (ie. stuck, clogged, open/shorted, etc.), the A/T will not be able to cycle through all the gears at best, or not propel the car at worst.
About the warning lights, don't ignore them and just discount them as instrumentation problem. Have it checked immediately using a diagnostic computer to tell you or the mechanic exactly what's wrong with your car.
