The new people's car
By: Ronald de los Reyes
Define a people’s car.
Well, a people’s car is somewhat categorized as an entry-level vehicle with a genuinely affordable price yet with a quality that is uncompromising and at the same time significantly useful.
As far as I can recall it was the Kia Pride back in the 80’s that was popularly associated with such a criterion.
Nowadays, there have been various contenders for such a privileged label. From fuel-saving subcompact sedans to compact crossover SUV’s down to the infamous super minis, everybody seem couldn’t get enough of that economical yet serviceable vehicle.
Blame the low economy and high fuel prices I suppose.
And lately, Toyota Motor Philippines has launched its own new aspiring people’s car, Avanza.
The vehicle’s name derives from the Italian word “avanzato,” which means “advanced.” It was first launched in 2004 in Indonesia, where it is assembled. Right now, the Avanza has already obtained success with more than 210, 000 units sold in Asia and Mexico since its introduction.
The Avanza is being positioned by Toyota as an “entry-level compact MPV.”
Dubbed the “baby Innova,” this new model is Toyota’s gift to those who want the affordability of subcompact sedans but need the versatility of multipurpose vehicles.
“The Avanza suits the needs of hardworking middle-class Pinoys,” says TMP first vice-president for marketing Danny Isla. “We are reaching out to customers who are looking for a reliable, affordable, fuel-efficient and versatile vehicle that offers generous seating and load capa-city.”
With an overall length of just 4,120 millimeters, it’s even shorter than your average sedan yet still manages to be spacious inside, thanks to a long wheelbase.
And needless to say, this is perfect not only for the family and big groups of barkada on an out-of town trip but for public utility use as well.
Because of the Avanza’s relatively higher ground clearance as well as anti-flood features, Toyota is confident many sedan buyers will opt for the compact MPV.
The Avanza has two gasoline-engine options: 1.5-liter DOHC 16-valve VVT-i with 107 horsepower and 141 Newton-meter of torque, and 1.3-liter with 91 horsepower and 120 Newton-meter of torque. The 1.5-liter G model is equipped with either a manual or an automatic transmission, while the 1.3-liter J model comes only with a manual stick.
No wonder why this poses a threat to the Suzuki APV.
MacPherson struts underpin the Avanza up front, while the rear employs four-link coil springs. Not to mention the suspension set –up is of “car-like quality”.
Inside, the Avanza has Denso dual air-conditioning system, Kenwood two-din CD player, and power windows, side mirrors and door locks.
For safety, Toyota has furnished the Avanza G model with a driver-side airbag.
Compared to its big brother Innova, however, the Avanza has a trendier look. It flaunts well with side skirts and body kits too, if you ask me. So, it’s no wonder this vehicle will be a sight for sore eyes in upcoming local car shows. Bling- bling here we come!
Available body colors for the Avanza are white, silver, red mica, champagne and blue metallic.
The vehicle is being introduced at P773,000 for the 1.5G automatic, P738,000 for the 1.5G manual and P582,000 for the 1.3J manual.
The higher G model boasts multi-reflector headlamps, fog lamps, chrome grille, color-keyed bumpers, rear spoiler with high-mount stop lamp, window defogger and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Isla says TMPC is projecting to sell 900 units a month.
And yes gunning for the people’s car.

November 9th, 2006 02:27 PM #180Was in the dealership this am. The 1.3 J's interior is really ugly. IMO the pics look better than the actual units interior. It screams cheap, low quality materials, thin plastic and old school doors. The side panels reminds me of the early Tamaraws.
The 1.5G is not bad looking. Lots of cubby holes for stuff. Interior looks decent. Rear seats are held in place by a couple of bolts. Should not be hard to remove if you want to.
Ford kasi... it needs a lot of TLC. ;) Kidding aside, I don't know if other turbo vehicles have...
