Dinaan talaga ng Ateneo sa "heart strong".

This was an improbable win. La Salle was a better team in all fronts - more hitters, a more experienced setter, much better blocking.

But you'd see in Ateneo's plays how much synergy they had - perhaps the meditation strategy of Coach Tai really works.

This was a team with an injured (but still beautiful) libero in Denden, a rookie setter in Jia, and an overworked team captain in Alyssa. But somehow, they were able to come up with buwis-buhay digs, incredible sets, and stadium-shattering hits. This young Ateneo team surely exceeded all expectations.

Indeed, this was One Big Fight.

Ateneo proved to be the better team down the stretch, congrats. La Salle, on the other hand has nothing to be ashamed of as they valiantly fought to defend the crown, pero hindi talaga para sa Lady Spikers this year. Parang reverse ang nangyari between the 2 schools, natapos ang 5 year reign sa basketball, DLSU ang pumalit. Sa volleyball, natapos ang 3 year reign, Ateneo ang pumalit.

Ateneo's winning formula: hardwork, meditation and a coach who never ceased to believe

ATENEO's unlikely run to a first-ever UAAP women's volleyball championship wasn't made by luck alone.

For Lady Eagles star Alyssa Valdez, Ateneo's winning formula consisted of hardwork, unique techniques like meditation in between sets, and a foreign coach who - through the few English words he can speak - managed to make the team believe it can do the impossible.

"'Yung heart strong," said the league and Finals MVP, when asked where the Lady Eagles found the energy and motivation to pull off a dream playoff run which they capped with a three-set victory over the thrice-to-beat top seed La Salle on Saturday at a jampacked Mall of Asia Arena.

"'Yung motivation namin ang nag-work sa team, yung happy lang inside the court," the Ateneo star continued. "Minsan sa training kahit nakakainis si Coach Tai, lahat kami gustong matuto."

Valdez, of course, was referring to first-year Thai coach Anusorn 'Tai' Bundit, who brought in a rigorous training regimen, introduced the age-old art of meditation, and, more importantly, instilled a winning mentality in a team that finished runner-up the two previous seasons.

Bundit was a colorful figure on the sidelines with his antics, but there was no question he knew what he was doing.

Since coming back from a trip to Thailand to attend to his duties with his country's national pool, Bundit led the Lady Eagles to seven straight wins to finish the eliminations followed by victories over Adamson, National University (twice) and La Salle (thrice) in the playoffs.

In all, the Lady Eagles lost just twice in all the games Bundit coached.

Bundit's principle was simple: "If you believe you can win, you will win. If you're happy and you want to win, you will win."

Bundit has certainly turned the Lady Eagles into believers. In turn, he made them winners.

"Si Coach Tai kasi, sabi nya, 'If you believe you can win, you will win,'" Valdez said.

When the Lady Eagles came from 7 points down to beat La Salle in the 2nd set, I knew they were going for the kill in the third. The Lady Spikers never knew what hit them.

Dati naaangasan ako kay aby lalo na pag nagrereact sya every kill. Now I understand na she is only doing that as a team captain. She cannot let her team members see her weaknesses. Malambot din pala siya. Nice game for both teams.

^^ Maangas naman talaga yun at yung coach nila. Kaya now they know how it feels to be humble and humbled

Eh yung Ateneo players, on or off the court, win or lose, all smiles pa rin and no hint of angas, trash talk or staring down the opponent. They are proud to be Blue Eagles but not do not display pride.

Just happy happy and heartstrong lang sila

it's been a long and strange journey for ateneo volleyball.

bilib din ako sa planning at tyaga ng management under mr liao, palou and co. they never wavered in their vision of bringing respect to vball in loyola heights.

    one big fight!
