Dwight Howard made a few jokes about his dunk contest preparation.
It was a little funny. But it was not light-hearted.
A year ago, after losing, he was clearly down -- the victim of a misunderstood, and under-appreciated sticker dunk.
So he didn't go crazy. He went corporate. To become Superman, first he spent a year as Clark Kent. He brainstormed. He workshopped. He field-tested. He focus-grouped with his teammates. As final preparation, he even abstained from candy and music for two weeks, to give himself a razor-sharp mental edge.
He recreated the razzle-dazzle of the ABA, with the goal orientation of an MBA.
Take the entire history of the dunk contest as evidence that coming up with creative new dunks is time-consuming and difficult. Never before has anyone come up with two truly inventive dunks in one competition. Howard? He came up with three.
That involves no small amount of effort.
His first dunk involved passing the ball to himself off the back of the backboard, catching it in mid-air, and flushing it with his left hand while his head lingered somewhere out of bounds. That one, he says, he has been working on for two years.
For another dunk, he started with the ball balanced on a mini-hoop. A reporter had a great idea: since Howard had been denied the opportunity to raise the rim to twelve feet, had he considered starting that dunk with the mini-hoop at twelve feet, to prove his hops?
Howard had field-tested it, and didn't think the resulting dunk resulted in enough flair.
The "self-alley?" He had tried it out in front of enough friends that their texts, calls, and emails were enough to convince him to include it.
Just keep trying him. No one had out-prepared Dwight Howard, which is precisely why he won.
The dunks on this night were off-the-charts inventive. Regular dunks -- feats of athleticism -- were not contenders at all. For instance, when Kyle Lowry ran the baseline, lobbed the ball off the foam padding side of the basket support, only to have it caught and flushed spectatularly by a trailing Rudy Gay, the audience largely shrugged. Tonight we were spoiled by the likes of Gerald Green dunking as he blew out a candle stuck into the top of a cupcake resting atop the rim.
Howard, for his part, had four well-executed dunks with outside-the-box creativity.
Just a few days ago, ESPN's Scoop Jackson theorized that this weekend would feature the last dunk contest ever. And in the leadup to tonight's dunk contest, it seemed he might be right. As Howard himself noted, the mood was not all that electric as the dunkers emerged onto the court. Last night, at the D-League's dunk contest, Mike Taylor of the Idaho Stampede threw down a few that had everyone on the sidelines saying that he could win at the big show. There were even empty seats in this house at the outset of tonight's dunk contest, which certainly was not the case in contest's heyday, when the likes of Michael Jordan and Vince Carter were wowing the fans.
"I think," Howard said, with his work behind him and a trophy beside him, "the dunk contest is back."

BDL in the Big Easy: Ranking Saturday night’s dunks

1. Dwight Howard's Self Alley-Oop (first dunk, finals). I don't know what's tougher, tapping a ball off the glass from a bounce and then slamming it home with your opposite hand or trying to explain it. That dunk was unreal. My only complaint: Dwight almost made it look too easy. It could've used a little more oomph!
2. Howard's Behind-The-Glass (first dunk, first round). He took Andre Iguodala's '06 classic and added a freakin' windmill. It's amazing he didn't decapitate himself.
3. Gerald Green's Through-The-Legs Off-The-Bounce Pass (first dunk, finals). G-Money has mastered the art of putting the ball through his legs. He gets that thing around and up unbelievably quick. Too bad Rashard McCants doesn't know how to throw a pass.
4. Jamario Moon's 360 Off-The-Bounce (first dunk, first round). The extension on this one was ridiculous. Moon had to go way, way back -- while spinning -- to make it happen. Watch how high he gets.
5. Green's Cupcake (first dunk, first round). Loved the creativity with this one. The replays of Green blowing out the candle had the arena in stitches. Obvious impossible recommendation for next year: light the candle.
6. Howard's Superman (second "dunk," first round). I'm going to get grilled in the comments for placing this so low, but the fact of the matter is Dwight didn't dunk the ball. He threw it in. That's not a dunk. It's a shame, too, because everything else was perfect.
7. Green's No Shoes Through-The-Legs (second dunk, finals). This one failed for two reasons. First, Green had just gone through-the-legs on his dunk prior. Second, I didn't even realize he had taken his shoes off. He could have sold that better.
8. Rudy Gay's Off-The-Stanchion (second dunk, first round). YouTube failed us tonight.
9. Moon's Tape (second dunk, first round). This dunk probably would've gotten Moon into the finals had he just ditched that whole tape set-up. Don't ever take up the javelin, Moon.
10. Howard's Mini-Basket (second dunk, finals). Meh.
11. Green's Windmill From The Ladder Pass. This one was horrible. Green windmill'd a lazy man's alley-oop. Color me whoopty-freakin-do.
12. Gay's Left-Handed Windmill (first dunk, first round). This was the only dunk of the night to score in the 30's -- and rightfully so. Nick Young would've put on a much more entertaining show. Sorry, Gay.

here's ricky davis and his infamous in-between the legs attempt during an actual game:
tony parker can't get his legs under him:
even lebron misses them:
and what would be a missed dunk list be without ILD's fave player, adonal foyle:
Ohoy....
Here’s what else Y! Sports was hearing as the All-Star break ended:
• The Los Angeles Clippers are trying to pry Mike Miller out of Memphis with an offer of expiring contracts that includes a package of Sam Cassell and Aaron Williams. The Grizzlies want the Clippers first-round pick in 2008, and so far, the Clippers are balking.
• After sending a scout to see him in Memphis last week, the Denver Nuggets are talking with the Grizzlies about acquiring guard Kyle Lowry for Von Wafer and a first-round draft pick.
• The Cleveland Cavaliers value Philadelphia’s Andre Miller more than they did Mike Bibby, but the Sixers haven’t shown much inclination to move their point guard, maybe even less now that they’ve experienced some success. And if Philadelphia opted to trade Andre Miller? It’s hard to imagine Cleveland being able to put together a worthy package.
The Cavaliers also have had talks regarding Mike Miller and two other point guards: Lowry and Portland’s Jarrett Jack.
• With an understanding that they’ll need to re-sign restricted free agent guard Jose Calderon and Carlos Delfino this summer, the Raptors are fielding offers for Jason Kapono. It’s unlikely they’ll get many considering the three years and nearly $19 million left on Kapono’s contract.
• The Orlando Magic have continued to shop for frontline help with Pat Garrity’s expiring contract as bait.
• The San Antonio Spurs are most interested in getting Tony Parker back in the lineup and seeing what their roster looks like at full strength. But with a couple of expiring contracts of their own, most notably that of Brent Barry, they've also actively looked for additional help. The Spurs were in the Kyle Korver talks with Philadelphia, but didn’t want to give up a first-round pick. They also talked to the Atlanta Hawks about Josh Childress, but were quickly rebuffed.
With Shaquille O’Neal now in Phoenix and Yao Ming’s Houston Rockets coming on strong, the Spurs also might be in the market for more size.
^ + knicks' eddy curry to miami?
imho the mavs are giving away too much with harris and 2 1st round picks just to get kidd![]()
