Ginebra lands Reavies, Mamaril
REY JOBLE
AT this early in the off-season, Barangay Ginebra is proving to be the busiest among teams of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)
Shortly after re-signing to new contracts veterans Rodney Santos and Andy Seigle, the Kings found themselves involve in a three-team trade that netted them big men Raffi Reavies and Billy Mamaril.
The 12-player deal that included the rights on controversial Fil-Am Rudy Hatfield and three future picks had the Kings doing business with the Coca-Cola Tigers and the Air21 Express in what was easily the biggest off season trade in the league so far.
The papers consummating the trade will be submitted to the PBA Commissioner’s Office tomorrow.
A highly placed source revealed to PJ that in exchange of Mamaril and Raffi Reavis, the Tigers acquired Ryan Bernardo from Air21 and Kalani Ferreria, Manny Ramos and a future first round pick and two second round picks from the Kings.
In return, Air21 took in Aries Dimaunahan and 6-7 forward Ervin Sotto from Ginebra.
“I think it’s a fair deal to everyone,” said the source.
Being sister teams, the Kings and Tigers are not allowed to trade players directly, necessitating the presence of the Express as a third party.
The Kings had a successful 2004 season, but could only finish fourth in this year’s Fiesta Conference.
Injuries hampered the Kings’ campaign in the recent Philippine Cup, where they failed to retain their title, even coming up short of reaching the semis.
By getting Mamaril and Reavis, Ginebra has beefed up its already formidable frontline led by Eric Menk, Romel Adducul, Seigle and sophomore Mike Holper.
Their inclusion in Ginebra’s line-up installed the Kings back as a championship contender, not to mention the fact that they also got the rights on the hardworking Hatfield.
Hatfield is still working on his papers in the hope of being reinstated in the league again.
On the side of the Tigers, they too, are trying to put up a core composed of promising young guys.
By acquiring Ferreria, the Tigers strengthen the guard rotation of coach Binky Favis. Bernardo and Ramos will serve as relievers to Ali Peek and Neil Rañeses.
The Tigers, who will not have a first round pick in the coming draft, have two first round picks and two second round picks either next year or 2008.
For the Express, the inclusion of Sotto reunites him with former St. Francis Doves teammates Yancy and Ranidel de Ocampo.
The De Ocampos and Sotto formed up the Doves triple tower that catapulted the team to numerous championships in the NCRAA.
By taking in Sotto, the Express have deepened their frontline. They already have the De Ocampos, veteran Mark Telan and banger Homer Se.
Dimaunahan, a scrappy guard who has a decent touch from the three-point region, will serve as back-up for Wynne Arboleda.

RenRen erupts for TNT
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
The Philippine Star 07/30/2006
RenRen Ritualo saved his best for last as he erupted for 31 points and knocked down six triples in Talk ‘N’ Text’s final game at the Southern California Pro Basketball Summer League in Long Beach recently.
Phone Pals coach Derick Pumaren, texting from the US, said the outcome wasn’t settled until the last two minutes when the Los Angeles All-Stars broke away. Talk ‘N’ Text ended its campaign with a 1-4 record.
A surprise addition to the All-Stars lineup was Sta. Lucia Realty’s Alex Cabagnot. His teammates included 6-2 Marcus Carr, 6-10 Adema Ndiaye, 6-6 Tyler Murphy and 6-2 Jan-Michael Thomas who averaged 20.5 points and hit 138 triples at San Joaquin Delta junior college in 1997-98.
