Hay, so much for Camby's strong fantasy run... (But glad for the Nuggets as a team though)

The Nuggets seem to have benefited the most by their deadline deals this season, landing important depth in the injury plagued frontcourt with additions of Reggie Evans and Ruben Patterson. Their presence will allow coach George Karl to let Marcus Camby and Martin rest their ailments in the final weeks to be healthy for the postseason. Keep that in mind when you’re setting your lineups with just three-game weeks ahead.

Jim: hehehe, sakit na ni Baron Davis yan, sobrang injury risk yan, dati sa likod ngayon sa ankles, kaya nagulat ako before nung trinade mo si Kobe for him, you could have gotten a top 5 player for Kobe.

Cassell as a coach? That's his goal

    Steve Aschburner, Star Tribune
OK, so Sam Cassell is the head coach of your NBA team and, late in a tight game against the Nuggets, he draws up a defensive play...

Sounds like the setup of a joke, doesn't it? Cassell, one of the most headstrong and incorrigible players in the league over the last decade or so, actually leading men and working the sideline and presumably asking his players to get a stop every once in a while?

Wait and see, the ex-Timberwolf said.

Cassell's plan for a long time has been to play another two seasons after this one, then to get into coaching. No less an authority than Detroit's Flip Saunders saw the game strategist in Cassell when the two were together in Minnesota. Now Cassell wants to fast-track his aspirations by coaching the Clippers' summer-league team.

"I want to get out there and show what I can do," Cassell told the L.A. Times last week. "I just want to get ready to take that next step. This is where I want to be, so why not just get it started now?"

Cassell said he wasn't trying to step on the toes of any current Clippers assistants, and would be happy coaching just one summer game.

"Everybody knows how I play the game, the only thing I care about is winning and I'll bring the same thing to coaching," Cassell said.

    With a straight face, too.

    (Wearing) down under

If Milwaukee big man Andrew Bogut looks a little sluggish lately, it's because he is. The 2005 No. 1 draft pick finally acknowledged that the long NBA season has caught up to him.

"I think I just have to grind it out," said Bogut, a starter in all but five games.

Bogut's best source of relaxation during this rookie season? Staying in touch with friends back in Australia via the Internet.

Bogut likely won't offer much of a challenge to New Orleans guard Chris Paul in rookie of the year balloting. But his team isn't second-guessing its pick.

"He's had some big games in which, if it hadn't been for him, we wouldn't have won," Bucks coach Terry Stotts said. "He's a consummate team player who is committed to winning and so, from that standpoint, he's been great."

    Hatchet buried, not in head

Boston's Paul Pierce and Denver coach George Karl apparently have moved on from the friction between them after the failed 2002 World Championship effort, when Pierce was depicted as a selfish ball-hog and Karl, as coach, did little to refute it.

Just the other day, Pierce -- who is getting high marks these days for an improved, more mature attitude -- said: "It's two adults moving on from a bad situation and we're just leaving it behind, that's all."

And Karl lavished praise on Pierce: "Is there a more complete basketball player in the NBA? You could argue he does any part of the game as well as anybody. ... I think he understands the complete player is more valuable than a scoring player."

Back to the future, Part II

If Marcus Camby winds up as the NBA's leader in blocked shots this season, the Denver center will tie a record for most seasons between winning a first and second statistical crown. Camby won the blocked shots title in 1997-98 when he averaged 3.65 for Toronto. Indiana's Reggie Miller led the league in free-throw shooting in 1990-91 and again in 1998-99.

    The big "whoa!"

Over a recent five-game stretch, Nets guard Jason Kidd averaged 11.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 11.6 assists. Kidd suggested that maintaining a near-triple-double pace for a full month might be possible, but he remains in awe of Oscar Robertson, who did it over a full season.

"To see a guy like Oscar do it for 82, that's mind-boggling, really," he said.

    Dot ... dot ... dot

    • Out of the hissing match between New York guard Stephon Marbury and coach Larry Brown came this beauty from Marbury: "My mother taught me that: If someone hits you, you hit them back."

    • When former Wolves backup Darrick Martin notched a double-double (18 points, 12 assists) for Toronto against the 76ers, it was the first for the 36-year-old Martin since March 1999.

    • Go figure: Indiana is 3-1 against Miami and Detroit so far, but 0-5 against Toronto and Atlanta.

    • Dating to Jan. 14, former Gophers guard Kevin Burleson had missed 29 consecutive shots for the Charlotte Bobcats.

    • New Jersey's Vince Carter, so excited to have two days off in a row during a four-day gap between Nets games, took advantage by bowling on both days. Carter told a reporter he owns four bowling balls.

An assortment of sources was used in compiling this report.

Man, I predict a 3-6 or 4-5 loss to Kimps this week... Lakas ng team nya last week! Based on last weeks' stats, TO lang ako clear na lamang. The rest either tambak ako or kapit...

Rotisserie By The Numbers: Category Leaders
    March 17, 2006

    By Craig Rondinone
    SportsTicker Contributing Writer

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - If you have a player leading the NBA in points, rebounds, assists, blocks or steals, also knows as The Big Five, chances are your fantasy hoops team is in decent shape.

Which players are leading the most important fantasy categories with only weeks left in the season? And what are the chances they keep up the good work and hold on to finish as kings of their categories? Here is a look:

SCORING - Kobe Bryant, Lakers: No one hogs the ball more than Kobe, no one shoots more than Kobe and no one scores more than Kobe. Pretty simple formula, actually. You shoot the most, you score the most. Bryant has a slim scoring lead over Philly's Allen Iverson, but he should probably hold on to win the scoring crown.

The key to Kobe is how much he scores at home. In Laker home games, Bryant is averaging an ungodly 37.2 ppg. In road games he only gets 32.7 ppg. 32.7 ppg? Boy, he stinks away from L.A.!

REBOUNDING - Kevin Garnett, Timberwolves: This is the tightest race among the five major categories. KG has been the No. 1 man for the majority of the season, but he has millions of big men nipping at his heels.

Garnett is first with 12.4 rebounds per contest, but then Phoenix's Shawn Marion averages 12.3, Orlando's man-child Dwight Howard is at 12.2 and Defensive Player of the Century Ben Wallace is at 12.0. This is anybody's race, but Garnett has been the man to beat all season long (plus I have him on my fantasy team), so I am sticking with him to win the Windex title.

ASSISTS - Steve Nash, Suns: This category was history in December. Nash has been the only player averaging more than 10 assists per game the entire season. No one else in the league even averages nine per game. Nash would have to have 10 consecutive one-assist games just to make the assist race interesting. I guess last season was no fluke.

And if you do not think Nash is the best passer and playmaker in the league, just ask Raja Bell, Tim Thomas, Boris Diaw, Eddie House and other marginal Suns. These guys are having the best fantasy seasons of their careers because of Nash.

BLOCKS - Marcus Camby, Nuggets: The blocked shots championship is all but wrapped up. Camby has a half-block-per-game lead over his next-closest competitor, and the two nearest guys to him are Philadelphia's Samuel Dalembert, who barely plays anymore, and Utah's Andrei Kirilenko, who is due to have another injury any day now.

Camby could also die at any moment with his brittle body, but even if he sprained a hair follicle and missed the rest of the season, no one would catch him in the category.

STEALS - Gerald Wallace, Bobcats: Charlotte is a hapless team, but if the Bobcats do one thing well, it is steal the ball. Wallace and teammate Brevin Knight are 1-2 in swipes, with Wallace holding a slight lead at 2.50 per game, just ahead of Knight's 2.27.

Wallace is having a career year in his fifth NBA season. He is blowing away his previous career highs in not only steals, but points and rebounds as well. Look for Wallace to hold on to win the steals race by .000001 over Knight.

    WEEK 21 PREVIEW:

Schedules: If you have not had your fill of the Chris Kaman Show yet, you are in luck. The Los Angeles Clippers play five games next week. Count 'em, five!

Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Houston, Indiana, Memphis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, Seattle, Toronto and the Los Angeles Lakers play four games. The other teams in the league play three.

Nicest sked: Cleveland. LeBron James has a chance to score 100 points next week, and Eric Snow has a chance to score 10. The Cavs host Charlotte and Boston, and play at Houston against a McGrady-less Rockets team.

Nastiest sked: Charlotte. Look for a down week from pocket-picker Brevin Knight and his teammates. Charlotte plays at Cleveland, Miami and Memphis and has one home games versus Orlando.

Three players who got it going on:

Carlos Boozer, Jazz: Booze has been cruising this month now that he is completely healthy. He is averaging 13 points and 7.1 rebounds in March, with his last game being a 30-point, 10-board effort against Orlando.

Jake Tsakalidis, Grizzlies: Many fantasy owners are probably afraid to touch him for fear of butchering his last name, but this lumbering big man has been on a double-double tear lately, recording three of them over his last four games.

Carlos Arroyo, Magic: What a weird career this kid has had. Arroyo looked promising when he was with Utah, then became the 12th-man for Detroit, and now he has is back to being a solid fantasy contributor with Orlando. After averaging just 3.2 ppg this season for the Pistons, Arroyo is scoring 12.3 ppg for the Magic.

Three players who have nothing going on:

Tracy McGrady, Rockets: T-Mac is in serious need of a chiropractor again. His cranky back is going to cost him another five weeks of action. Getting McGrady and Yao Ming on the court together is harder than getting Steve Perry back together with Journey.

Emeka Okafor, Bobcats: Fantasy owners saw this coming from miles away. Okafor is going to miss the remainder of the season with his ankle injury. Jumaine Jones, your fantasy value is now safe until the 2006-07 season.

Gary Payton, Heat: Many fantasy pundits - not me, others - believed "The Glove" would eventually steal the starting point guard spot in Miami away from Jason Williams. Nope. Williams is entrenched as the starter and doing well, while Payton has scored in double digits just once in his last 11 games.

Rot Water Cooler - Three things being talked about more than baseball's WBC Tournament and college basketball's NCAA Tournament:

Amare Stoudemire's chances of returning: Stoudemire says he thinks there is a 50-50 chance we will see him on the court this season. The odds are also 50-50 that Boris Diaw records another triple-double before the season ends.

Stephon Marbury's saying he will play like "Starbury" again: I guess this means he is going to shoot more and pass less, and possibly play even less defense than he already does (is that possible?). This is bad news for Larry Brown, but good news for fantasy owners. In a related story, Steve Francis says he is going to start playing like "Francine" again.

Carmelo Anthony's co-owning an Indy Racing League team: How great what a pit crew of Earl Boykins, Ruben Patterson and Nene be? Just do not let Kenyon Martin be the driver, Melo. I think he probably has some road rage issues. Oh, and do not let Marcus Camby work under the hood. He is bound to hurt himself.
