Those of you who have Amare Stoudemire stashed away on your bench (he's owned in over 97 percent of Yahoo! leagues) should have particular interest in the comments he made over the weekend. Stoudemire told ESPN.com on Friday that he doesn't expect to be able to return until at least March, saying that he and the team are striving for a goal of "two months out" from now. He also said that the option to wait until next season to return is still there as well, citing the fact that, while he wants to win a championship and feels the current Suns team is very close, his health is the most important thing to him right now. The entire organization has stressed that Stoudemire wouldn't be rushed back under any circumstance, even if he appeared ahead of schedule at any point.
Now would be a good time to reconsider your situation if you are holding Amare in your league – it's likely that he will only be active for around the final six weeks of the season, and he will undoubtedly be eased back into the rotation at a snail's pace as more of a tuner for the playoffs. If you have the roster space, it may be worth hanging onto him until the picture becomes more clear, but if you are counting on his late production to pull your team up from some kind of hole, it seems more and more likely that you will be disappointed.
BARGAIN BIN: Top players available in 50 percent of Yahoo! leagues
David Wesley (SG, Houston)
Wesley gets more run any time Tracy McGrady's troublesome back keeps him out of games, and right now he would make an excellent short-term player for roto or head-to-head teams. In his past five games, he's averaged 19.0 points on 51 percent shooting, 2.0 threes, and 3.4 assists.
Jeff Foster (C, Indiana)
Are you desperate for boards? When Foster is playing well, he is a big help to fantasy squads in that one area. Despite coming off the bench for the most part recently, Foster has played well and with typical results – he's averaged 9.7 rebounds in just over 25 minutes over the past eight games, and could be in the starting lineup sooner than later.
MARKET MOVERS: Charting player values
Samuel Dalembert (C, Philadelphia) – Dalembert has been approaching Marcus Camby territory with his recent numbers – in six January games, his averages have been 14.0 points on 68 percent shooting, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks.
Rafer Alston (PG, Houston) – Alston has been very effective since the first of the year – in seven January games, he's averaged 15.3 points, 2.1 threes, 7.7 assists, 4.1 boards, and 2.3 steals.
Dwayne Wade (PG, Miami) – Wade has come back with a vengeance since missing a game on January 6 with a shin injury – in four games, he's averaged 27.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 10.0 assists, and 3.5 steals.
Earl Boykins (PG, Denver) – Boykins has been superb off the bench for the Nuggets since January 1 – in seven games, he's averaged 19.6 points, 2.1 threes, and 4.1 assists.
Andres Nocioni (SF, Chicago) – When given the playing time this season, Nocioni is producing – in his past five games, he's averaged 29 minutes and 17.8 points on 60 percent shooting, 2.4 threes, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.
Raja Bell (SG, Phoenix) – Bell has been on fire from long range in recent games – he's averaged 3.4 threes in the past eight games, along with 18.5 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.5 steals.
Gerald Wallace (GF, Charlotte) – Wallace is once again peaking, and his ridiculous January numbers so far have been 17.4 points on 59 percent shooting, 9.9 boards, 3.4 steals, and 3.0 blocks. Now if only he could stay consistent (and healthy)…
Damon Jones (PG, Cleveland) – Moving into the starting lineup has only magnified his struggles – in seven games as a starter, Jones is averaging just 24 percent shooting, 4.3 points, and 1.1 threes in 28 minutes of playing time.
Chris Duhon (PG, Chicago) – It appears that, as a sub, Duhon isn't going to be much fantasy help – in five games since he was demoted to the bench, he's averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 assists.
Tony Parker (PG, San Antonio) – Parker is still scoring, but has almost as many turnovers (24) as assists (27) and has hit just 50 percent of his free throws so far in the month of January.
Shaquille O'Neal (C, Miami) – Shaq has had a very rough start to the new year – in seven games, he's averaging just 14.9 points and 41 percent free-throw shooing, while averaging more turnovers (2.4) than blocks, steals, and assists combined (2.3).
Brendan Haywood (C, Washington) – Haywood's averages since December 23 are 5.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks. He's played so poorly of late that he briefly lost his starting spot to Calvin Booth.
Number of the Week
39 – The percentage of Yahoo! leagues in which Doug Christie occupies a roster spot. As Matt Romig pointed out in last week's NHL Skinny, all your teams go on your permanent record on your new Yahoo! player profile. Inactivity is the bane of fantasy leagues – stay active, get in there, make some changes, and shake things up. Remember, it's not too late to make a run in your fantasy league – we're not even at the half-way point yet.
