Car purchases are never completely objective affairs. Much still has to do with perception. This is what keeps Honda relevant, and what keeps Kia/Mazda/Chevrolet second-stringers.
A lot of forumers here bash people who just go for tried and tested brands with good perception, but in reality, that's what people do when they're in unfamiliar territory - go with what's tried and tested.
I'm sure if I asked people who knew nothing about computers to buy a hard drive, they'll stick with Seagate and Western Digital even if other brands like Samsung are just as good (if not better) while having lower price points. Likewise, if you asked someone to choose between a Canon kit lens and a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, most who know nothing will choose the Canon.
It's easy to say, "so why don't they take time to research?" Simple answer is that they're not interested.

April 27th, 2015 06:40 PM #113I've seen the September to December 2014 sales kasi of all cars here. In terms of numbers, it's Toyota with almost all variants selling well, Mitsu with the Montero, and Ford with the Ecosport & Ranger.
So we can safely say they are the true top 3. For Honda to still maintain such a status quo is we have to determine where it's coming from? Is it from those loud mufflers sporting SiRs and Vtecs in the streets. Is it from the 1st and 2nd CRV generation who we can't deny dominated the SUV market of those days. But those days are like almost a decade ago.
What we should ask is the gen Z or Y or X or whatever we call now the yuppie generation. For all we know, ang view Nila sa Honda is like Suzuki. Motorcycles that also sell cars.

Gen Y ako.
I still think Hondas are reliable, with sweet-sounding, high revving engines. I also think that they have lost their value-for-money over the years. I'm in the market for a compact but I didn't even consider the FB bec its 1.8V MT costs 100k more than an Altis G even if the latter has more features and space. But I would've liked it because of its wonderful engine and handling.Last edited by jut703; April 28th, 2015 at 12:26 AM.

April 27th, 2015 07:24 PM #115Problem with honda is their pricing. Though they offer overall better products, there are a lot more options out there which are good enough that consumers are more price sensitive.

Honda obviously isn't after volume alone. Their current pricing gives them much better unit margins than their competitors. Total profitability is most probably good despite lower sales.

Brand perception and:
If you sell at a premium and make more margin on your cars... even if you sell fewer cars, you are still good.
As an example: Mitsubishi dealers sell a crapload of Mirages, but their unit margins on these small cars are horrible. Somewhere in the 4% range... or even lower. Without financing and customers coming back for PMS, they'd be in the red on each car sold. (the dealers that is. The Distributor/manufacturer will still be okay at lower margins... they've got the volume)
Honda is seeing everyone else play the high volume / low margin / financing promo game... and they're having nothing of it. They're selling on brand image and charging more, and people are still buying.
They may have lost some of the technological edge, but I'd put their new 1.5 CVT up against any other engine in the class in terms of performance and fuel economy... it's a really great combination. But smart money is still on the 1.5 MT, in terms of long-term ownership.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
