iPhone users, what makes you stick with iOS vs switching to Android?

Background: Having a bit of buyer’s remorse moving back to iOS from Android. Really missing the flexibility and versatility of Android, iOS feels so limited. The simplicity of iOS is offset by the lack of things you can do with it.

Been trying to love the iPhone but when I use my old Note 10 it just feels like a better package overall (except battery life since it’s a year old).

Mostly for security ... something that's not tangible to most users ... photo app is fast when you have thousands of photos ... Careful with Google Keep, there's a bug and it deletes notes randomly ...

This is what's been holding me back from switching. A lot of my productivity comes from working with the Note8 and 10. Pag nagswitch ako, daming mawawala.

    • The latest Android releases have been certified by our global IT security team for corporate use. They wouldn’t allow our corporate emails and apps to be accessed by Android phones if it wasn’t secure enough (about 5 yrs back only iOS was allowed).

    • Photo app is crap for iOS compared to Samsung’s Gallery:

    1. Everything gets saved in one folder, and you have to manually organize your folders. So saving a photo from FB Messenger gets saved in the main photos photos unlike in Android where it gets saved to its own Messenger folder, but can also be viewed along with all other pictures if you view it from the “All Photos” folder.

    2. Moving a picture from one album to another doesn’t actually move it - it will exist in both folders unless you delete it from the first folder. That’s BS because the point of folders is to organize things - it’ll get disorganized if a photo appears multiple times in multiple folders. For Android, on the off-chance you want photos to appear in 2 albums, you can duplicate it, but otherwise the default option is to move it. Similar to how it is when you move files from one folder to the other on Windows/Mac.

    3. Transferring photos is such a pain in iOS. I like having photos from all my travels in my phone. For my Note 10, it’s literally drag and drop from my Windows/Mac to my phone, with folders and sub-folders kept intact. For the iPhone, if I want to transfer photos, I have to “sync” them using iTunes on Windows or Finder on Mac - then only the first-level folders are copied, any sub-folders are lost. Plus, you can’t delete photos copied from your Mac directly from your phone. If you want to get rid of them, you have to connect your phone to your Mac, and then click unsync, and that’s the only time it gets deleted.

    • On Google Keep - I’ve been using it for 5 years over 6 different phones and I’ve never lost any notes. Cloud syncing has been reliable as well so even when migrating to a new phone, all my notes get transferred.

I’m curious - what was the last Android phone you used?

I have a hypo that people who haven’t tried both OSes recently rely heavily on what they read on the internet or what other people say when forming their opinion about the “other side”.

I like the 2 security features ios has introduced recently.

1st is the icon indicator that your mic or camera is being used. For Android you can manage who can use the mic or camera but there's no notification if an app is using it. I know because I have an app that can record video and voice on my wife's and kid's phones and send it to me by email without them knowing it.

2nd is the app tracking permission that facebook is mad about. For Android I have to put facebook on separate profile with limited access and no access to other app so that it can't track me.

Hmmmm good question bro, siguro isa ako kabilang sa cult followers. Started using iPhone since the 3G model.

Haven’t used an android device talaga unless meron ipa configure family / friends ko. Pero gamit thoroughly wala ako experience.

Siguro nasanay na lang talaga ako sa ios environment. Nasimplehan. I assume every tech features android has a counterpart on it?

Currently I got iphone, iwatch, macbook air and airpods pro. Yung ease of linking devices is a plus for me. Airdrop/ copy paste feature from phone to mac / mac to phone (hahaha ang babaw ko)

Agree ako sa observations mo re: photos managing hehe you create an album yet retained pa din sa camera roll. Nagdoble ika nga (doble din sa storage?).

What I envy sa android is expandable memory, you can store downloaded music and play it. Sa apple you need to subscribe / buy parati.

My sister and her whole family is firmly in the Apple ecosystem. Her husband is the main influencer (and financer) but it's ok for their purposes. My parents used to be Android users but once they started getting hand-me-down iPhones from us they appreciated the simplicity and convenience of iOS. They also use iPads for their company apps so they're already familiar with the system.

My wife is also firmly an iOS user. She used to be on Android until she fell in love with the 6s' camera and iMessage. 2 phones later and she's still on iOS. She's not a power user though so she still asks me how to set things up every now and then.

I will always be on Android. I like the convenience of file transfers and side-loading apps. I can also go cheap and just get the bare minimum I need (AMOLED or nothing).

From my point-of-view iOS is ok for those who like things to just work most of the time with minimal tinkering. Comes with a premium though. I also like how they keep the firmware updated even for old phones.

Android is for everyone else from those who just need a simple daily smartphone to those who can maximize its potential.

Longer iOS support is definitely a big plus for the iPhones. Mauunang bumagal yung phone or masira yung battery before you’re unable to upgrade to the latest OS.

But since I typically change phones every 1-2 years, di naman naabutan ng EOL yung OS ng Android phones ko. If anything, delayed OS releases are a bit of a pet peeve, but since flagship Samsungs are typically higher in the priority list vs a midrange model, the wait isn’t as long.

This is a nice feature nga, though not super dealbreaking. Android will also show you what apps are running in the background though it doesn’t say specifically what hardware (mic/camera/GPS) the app is using at the moment.

I guess tanggap ko na na in this day and age everything we do can be tracked - it’s not like I’m influential enough to be tracked though so it’s really just a drop in the bucket. If anything, I appreciate the personalized ads.

Super true that once you get in the ecosystem, it’s hard to leave. Especially the Apple ecosystem - pretty seamless between devices (except photos lol).

I also have the full suite of Apple devices except the Apple watch. Interestingly even if Samsung phone ko dati, no issue naman using it along with the iPad and Macbook. Mas madali pa rin nga magtransfer ng pics from Mac to Samsung kasi drag and drop lang vs the whole syncing thing for iPhone.

If you haven’t tried a flagship Android, you really won’t know what you’re missing because Apple does what it’s able to do very well.

My case lang is different because I moved from iOS to Android to iOS. I remember being so amazed with all the stuff I can do with my Note 5 before that my iPhone 6 couldn’t. 5 years on, my older Note 10 can still do more things than the latest and greatest iPhone 12 Pro can.

I also have an iPad Pro and a Samsung A 10.1. In the tablet sphere, iPadOS beats Android by knockout. I super prefer the iPad because it feels more seamless, better as a content consumption tool (viewing videos, reading books, browsing the internet) and more and more getting better at content creation (video/photo editing, Office apps). The Samsung tab feels like a half-hearted effort, literally an Android phone with a bigger screen lang.

Back to iOS vs Android - you made a very good point on the market of each:

    • iOS has a certain scope of things it can do, and it does that scope very intuitively and seamlessly. If your use case falls within that scope, you will find your iPhone very simple to use. However, if you do more than Apple’s typical use case (or have gotten spoiled with Android’s flexibility), you’ll find the iPhone complicated to work around or outright restricted.

    • Android on the other hand has much more things in its bag of tricks, especially if you have a flagship. The execution of these tricks often isn’t the most refined, and between the tradeoff of simplicity vs flexibility/customizability, Android typically leans eschews the simplest solution to give you more options. For people who just want something that works, this appears as added complication. For people who want the nitty gritty, they appreciate the detail.

I will be an Android user until iOS allows its users to change its default Maps App (You can now set a default email and browser in iOS 14)

For me -> Android is either Samsung and Pixel only (UI of other devices are just strange)

I keep both as my other gadgets (e.g. drone, gimbal, GoPro etc) works better with iOS -> even CarPlay is easier to manage than Android Auto

But for a Primary device, its either an S/Note or Pixel

About security, as long as you don't side load apps, you will be fine with Android.

Samsung S/Z/Note and Pixel devices guarantees 3 years Android update + 1 year Security, so 4 years support

    Apple guarantees 4+1

IMO, 4 years lifespan is long enough for today's phones

Over the past 4 or 5 years...i have slowly been disinterested with screen type, resolution (retina or otherwise), processor, S pen, and even OS.

The killer app for me these past years has been the camera and attendant functionality that comes along with it (memory, file transfers, expandability, trick modes, optical zoom, night shots, etc)

I take too many photos and have stopped bringing my 14 year old mirrorless camera in trips a long time ago. So its a camera for me first and foremost.
Then a phone, communications and content consumption device second. This secondary part...i think is even between most mid to flagship phones. Just a matter of preference and familiarity. Photography has to be where it must stand out.

Big difference between One UI and stock Android. I know there are purists who like the stock Android feel (you might be one of them) and say that OneUI is full of bloatware, but for me OneUI makes the phone feel more polished, intuitive, and productive.

Had a Nexus 4 before, which had the same “pure, no bloatware” USP as your PH1. Sold it after 2 weeks, the stock Android OS felt like a Cherry Mobile phone (had one of those too). Never was a fan of alternative OSes either (LineageOS and CyanogenMod before it). Impression ko pang geek na pa-hipster, but reality is the end feel for most users is clunky.

Reviews of the PH1 never even put it in the league of the iPhone or the Samsung flagships, so the experience is pretty different. Company actually went belly-up already since the concept was overpromised and underdelivered.

For a time I also had 2 phones, iOS and Android, to get the best of both worlds as they say.

But over time I found it a hassle to bring 2 phones all the time. Eventually moved to one phone nalang and the compromise of sticking to one OS and having both work and personal on one phone is offset by the convenience of just bringing around one device.

How do you bring 2 phones when you walk around? I usually have keys, hanky, coins, etc on my left front pocket and one phone on the right. Nung naka 2 phones ako, lagi ko hawak yung isa or iniiwan sa car or pag kailangan talaga, squeeze in the left pocket with all the other stuff which is pretty uncomfy when sitting down.

IMO, if a user is smart enough to side-load apps to his device, he should be smart enough to protect himself against attacks.

For current phones, ano pa ba ang reason to jailbreak?

IMO, Camera is important, both photo and video, pero important din how the photos can be seen, hence big plus kung AMOLED + high refresh rate yung screen.

Speed is also important, minsan nakaka-inis yung "shutter lag" ng Samsung phones compared to an iPhone or a Pixel

I use the Microsoft launcher instead of One UI. I like wallpapers integration with Bing Photos and parallax scrolling effect.

All settings stored in the cloud. Easy to setup once i get a new device.

I see no need to root/jailbreak these days. I prefer my phone to be ready for the next update with a simple click.

Agree with this. I miss just double clicking my power button to turn on the camera for my Note. Sa iPhone kailangan pa long press yung icon on the screen. So the advantage of a faster shutter is offset by the clunkier mechanism to turn it on.

Do you notice the difference in image quality? For most shots I don’t notice the difference between my Note 10 and iPhone 12.

The last big jump I noticed was when I went from S8 to Note 10. Super layo ng quality of photos in low light because of Night Mode. But after that big Night Mode revolution, so far the improvements have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

I checked reviews of the S21 Ultra vs 12 Pro Max and the shots are pretty much down to preference rather than a distinct win for one or the other. Exception is the superior telephoto of the S21U, although in my experience I haven’t needed telephoto as much as I needed a good wide and ultrawide.

A simple edit in Photoshop Express will get the photos of one phone to look like the other, since they’re about 90% similar to begin with.

Blind Camera Comparison Video: iPhone 12 Pro Max vs. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra - MacRumors

My general observation is that if you buy the flagship of either OS/brand, you will get the best phone photography available at the time. The bigger differentiator for good shots really boils down to the photographer.

Bought a no-name DSP for the Mazda. It can be set up using Bluetooth pero via an Android app that is only available from the manufacturer.

Other than that haven't found any real reason to pirate. I don't play games on my phone anymore.
