P5B = US$109M. too little to be of any deterence. that can only buy 3 F16 jets and without the support to keep it flying. ang pwede lang mabili ng budget na yan will be either more md520 light attack helicopters na sana naman outfitted with 19-tube launchers and a minigun, or at least 6x.50 caliber machineguns. forget about buying the .50 cal machine gun pods, just nigger-rig 6 or maybe even 8 old browning .50s and let er rip!

i think they only cost US$5.5M each, so paf can buy at least 18 of those turbo-prop trainer/ground attack with light fighter capabilities (can carry 2 aim9 sidewinders).

Yep I agree na di na dapat sa jets gastusin ang pera, ok sa modern helicopters nalang kasi ang kalaban nasa bundok. Also dahil islands tayo dapat sa mga maliliit at modern sea going vessels. Or for modern weapons of infantry and training.

As for deterence, just in case a greedy neighbor wants to invade us I dont think a few planes piloted by inexperienced pilots will scare a determined invader .

my dad bought one of those MS simulator programs before because one of his fellow pilots said that it was interesting and i think he actually enjoyed playing with it, pero sabi niya iba pa rin daw kapag sa simulator ka talaga natuto, but it can be a helpful tool for a learning pilot.

They should invest more on navy to safeguard the country from illegal fisherman/bandits doing illegal transactions in philippine waters.With less than 10 or 20 jets on hand, thats nothing.It will not deter any invading countries to attack us.Iraq has lots of fighter jets but did not deter the US to conquer them.

Hmmm. Let's see. There's not much money, not much hardware, not much homegrown know-how.

So, what's there plenty of? Well, there's plenty of people. Maybe the AFP should make CAT mandatory for every able-bodied male and female from 18-48 years old, say one weekend a month. That should toughen up the populace and better ready to deal with an invasion.

Not sure if that'll happen. But, it sounds good to me.

Ahhh... good point there... that is what I am also thinking. Given our current financial standing, purchasing hi-tech fighter jets should not even be the priority of the PAF. I am not saying that I don't like to see an F/A-18 Hornet patrolling our skies with A-10s & A-64s supporting our ground troops... but let's be realistic.

Let's start with a simulated war scenario with China... let's assume that we have a few Hornets sitting at Villamor, Sangley or Basa Airbase. China wouldn't start a war using fighter jets, they'll bomb us first with their ballistic missiles - targeting the above mentioned airbases & radar stations. Since we don't have a missile defense, it'll render our fighter aircrafts as sitting targets.

As long as we keep our mutual defense pacts intact, we can survive an attack by a hostile nation and also act as a deterrent against any aggressor. And as you can recall, wars are won on the ground not from the sky.

Though one medium-term need for a fighter jet is to counter a 9/11 type of terrorist threat. Can you imagine a 747 crashing to the Makati CBD?

Nakaisip ako 2 more -- To bomb ASG bandit groups and it MIGHT be cheaper to patrol our seas from the sky rather than keeping dozens of boats at sea for weeks on end.

In all 3 cases though, dual prop - type planes with ground support6 capability should be more than enough.
