For an air force with an acute lack of aircraft, personal computers may be good enough to hone the skills of its pilots.

Maj. Gen. Michael Mendoza, chief of air staff, told The STAR that with the lack of fighter jets and training equipment such as flight simulators, Philippine Air Force (PAF) pilots have to make do with office computers at Basa Air Base in Pampanga for their training needs.

“It’s compulsory training for pilots,” Mendoza said.

He lamented that PAF, which turns 60 on July 7, has no combat capability and that in the event of an attack it has to depend on its few trainer jets reconfigured for combat purposes and on its aging Vietnam War era Huey choppers.

Mendoza said PAF’s last true blue fighter aircraft – F-5 Freedom Fighter – had already been decommissioned and that the air force will have to wait for two more years to get new fighter planes.

He said PAF is trying to figure out which type of aircraft to buy with its P5 billion budget. Many PAF pilots had left the service to work for commercial airlines where “they can hone their skills and at the same time earn more,” an air force official said.

Wawa naman ang mga piloto natin. Baka naman mas magaling pa yung mga bata sa "flight simulation" kaysa sa mga PAF pilots natin?

Ano kayang PC "flight simulation" ang ginagawa nila? "How to fly Flying Coffins like Huey Helicopters".

While the rest of the world, kayang mag-deploy ng bombs miles away from their targets, tayo, fighter planes natin Tora-tora (OV Bronco ba tawag dun?). Yung lalapit pa sa target, bago ihulog yung bomba.

Tsk tsk tsk this ain't good

No matter what the PAF does it will never be at par with the rest of the world.

"The PAF is trying to figure out which type of aircraft to buy with its P5 billion budget". A complete waste of money that can go a very, very long way for the poor.

This is not quite a frightening scenario as it at first appears.
Modern PC based flight simulators are incredibly sophisticated, and it is not only pilots who use them to hone their skills.

For the doubters amongst you out there take the examply of Lewis Hamilton. He is the British newcomer to Formula One Grand Prix racing and has come from nowhere to get a seat driving for the McClaren team this year.

In an interview at the start of the season he was asked how he could hope to compete with the vastly more experienced fellow professionals who had far superior knowledge of the circuits they were racing each other around. His answer was remarkable.....'I use my Playstation and 'drive' around the circuits for a few days before we leave home for practice and then the race itself' was his answer.

It must be working....in his first seven races in this years F1 championship he has finished on the podium 5 times AND WON THE LAST 2 RACES. He now leads the world championship (ahead of his team-mate and defending world champion Alonso) in his very first year. Even Schumacker took a few years to get up to speed!

Don't despare. PAF pilots will do just fine. Take it from an ex RAF pilot!

The $1 question is, do we really need to buy fighter jets??

PC-based training is useful for many aspects of pilot training such as navigation which is far more tedious than a gamer is willing to stomach. It does a good job of handling the basics. I do recall a friend of mine saying he needed to buy MS Flight Simulator because it's a requirement for ground school.

That's probably why MS Flight Simulator is still going strong even though the whole game genre itself is disappearing.

PAF Pilots Take Flight Lessons by Computer (instead of Flight Simulators)
