Anyone using speed radar/laser detectors? [MERGED]

Its still more than possible to do 60kph on EDSA and other major roads in Metro Manila. The problem is if you hit 61kph, ticketed for over the speed limit ka na. Pangbawi ng MMDA for their lost income when NCAP was banned.


I just had my other car installed with a radar/laser detector.

We've never used one of these, not even when we lived overseas.

Question - how do these detectors work? Do they warn you a few kilometers in advance that a radar's being used in the vicinity, or only when you're being scanned by the radar already?

Off the bat thought- It's going to be hard to contest these radar gun tickets, unless you have a GPS enabled dashcam that logs your speed at the same time stamp of the radar reading. If advanced or late yung dashcam time or the timestamp of the radar recording (hindi tugma time nila), it will greatly complicate things.

Naku, baka gawing cash cow na naman ito like the ASBU of the LGU's some time back.

Radar gun detection. Depends on the operator. If the operator keeps it turned on and pointing on the road, radar detectors will detect it at 500 meters or further. BUT if the operator does a POP method, like pop-up for a few seconds then puts the radar gun down or turns the emitter OFF, then the radar detector will not detect it until its pointing at you. This has happened to me along NLEX driving to CLARK. Good thing I was at 95kph when my detector alarm triggered. I saw the radar operator sitting behind the median metal crash barrier. Almost got me then.

Laser speed guns versus radar/laser detectors. The detectors are virtually useless against lasers because the moment it alarms, you are already caught by the laser gun.


To counter the thread of the laser speed gun, you will need a laser jammer. This device will fire back a laser signal when it detects a laser aimed at your vehicle. The result is an "error" when the speed gun tries to measure your speed. Do note that dfiferent brand laser jammers work in the same principle but differ in how they can be successful versus different brands/models of laser speed guns. Most advanaced laser speed guns use randomized coded signals that prevent most jamming of the signal. Fortunately for us, the MMDA, and other authorities still use more basic (cheaper) laser speed guns like the LTI TruSpeed 20/20.


FYI: Kindly note that laser jammer kits are LEGAL to use in the PH due to the fact that their is no laws against its use.

Radar detectors simply detect the radar signals from the radar speed guns. Assuming the radar gun is turned on, you can detect it starting between 500m to 1km away with most radar detectors. Most often, radar/laser speed guns are operated along straight lengths of road as radar/laser does not go around curves. For the same reason, its best for a speeding car to slow to legal speeds on top of hilly roads so your radar/laser detector can have time to sense of there is a speed-trap beyond the rise of the hill.

There have been cases like along coastal road where the vehicle was detected as "overspeeding" but actually driving at legal speeds. This was covered before in one of James Deakin's older articles. Even when properly documented of never exceeding the limit, the authorities still insisted their measurements were accurate and correct.

So, does anyone have a list of detectors that work on current radar and laser speed guns used locally?

I have been using Valentine One and UNIDEN detectors. Between the two, I prefer the valentine one. BTW, this is against radar.



For laser threats, I use a separate laser jammer system.

My newest version is the "Laser Interceptor Speedom" with the updated smaller "heads".

My older system is the BLINDER Laser Defense. My kit was purchased back in 2012, but still effective against the local laser speed guns.

what evidence did they show you, that you were indeed speeding?

They will show you the photo of your vehicle (license plate visible) and measured speed.
