Transmissons and differentials have breathers for heat management(basically protecting the seals). if the differential or transmission are hot and then exposed to cold water, they can potentially suck in water if completely submerged. water in oils can cause slipping or possibly "pop" out.
locally ARB diff breathers are being marketted recently in the 4x4 scene. unfortunately they dont know how to market it. they should have a headline that says: diff flood snorkels available from ARB.

July 20th, 2018 09:41 AM #22A snorkel is not a guarantee per se, isang set dapat if you're serious about wading- kailangan imodify airbox, seal the electonics/drive train/interior and minsan relocate alternator.

July 26th, 2018 06:39 PM #24So since it is not a lemon, why did the transfer case pop out of low range gearing? Is it a normal occurence under such conditions? Would it have fared better if he had used normal gearing instead?
City slicker/off roading noob here. Hehe

It's supposed to be a Land Rover Defender ... Supposedly one of the best 4x4s on the planet ... Land Rovers are being advertised fording rivers ... going over large rocks ... going through jungles ... over mountains ... And the low gear transmission pops out? ... Because of a hump or some small obstacle? In a city road? ... To top it off, it was driven by an experienced off-roader ... an RFC official convoy sweeper ...
Now Land Rover is doing PR damage control ... Maybe a Mitsubishi, Nissan or Toyota would have gone through the flood easily ...Last edited by Walter; July 27th, 2018 at 06:27 AM.

To add more context, wading through fresh rivers or muddy trenches in the forrest or on a well-established 4x4 track are one thing. Fording through three feet of disease-ridden sewage with the occasional sightings of floating human excrements and whatnot is totally another.
Not to judge as I’m pretty sure they have their reasons. All I’m saying is that, if it were me, the reasons had to be pretty compelling to risk being caught dead in the water (pun intended).Last edited by oj88; July 27th, 2018 at 08:54 AM.
