sir 170kphlang, COL offers regular seminars on stock investing. so does Accord Capital/Philstocks. For both, i don't think you need to open an account to attend.

    www.citiseconline.com
    www.philstocks.ph

There are also tons of sites on the internet to get you started on the basics. My favorite is investopedia.com. Heck, even Wikipedia is helpful

In your readings, you will encounter what's known as fundamental analysis(invest based on value) and technical analysis(based on price action). It's hard to recommend which one is more effective --there's a never ending debate on which one is the best. i guess you will eventually have to decide for yourself.

fundamental analysis is looking at companies' financial statements (revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities etc). that's what Warren Buffett does

technical analysis is looking at past performance of stock prices to predict future performance. technicians look for patterns in charts. they don't look at companies' true value

before the US housing bubble collapsed in 2007 there were hedge fund guys who did research as in they walked around neighborhoods and talked to homeowners and discovered mortgage lenders where giving loans to poor people to buy houses. they discovered lending standards were so low that anyone with a pulse was given a loan*. so they knew massive defaults were coming and they made bets the housing bubble would collapse (they bought default insurance against mortgage-backed bonds)... the housing bubble did collapse and they made a killing

    now that's fundamental analysis

    *ninja loan
    Definition of 'NINJA Loan'
A slang term for a loan extended to a borrower with "no income, no job and no assets". Whereas most lenders require the borrower to show a stable stream of income or sufficient collateral, a NINJA loan ignores the verification process.

kung humina remittance di ganyan kabilis ang effect

lumakas dollar kagabi against all major currencies coz the Fed is gonna scale back QE (printing money to buy assets)

QE devalues the dollar so reducing QE is dollar positive

    --

foreign portfolio investments come in, convert dollar to peso, buy peso-denominated assets so that's peso positive

when the reverse happens -- sell peso-denominated assets, convert peso to dollar --- that's dollar positive

now the BSP doesnt have to spend so much money keeping the peso from appreciating too much hehe

problem is if peso falls too fast

the BSP can defend the peso by selling dollars but there's only a limited amount of dollars

the BSP can raise rates but that would raise borrowing cost which would slow down the economy

    What is QE(Quantitative Easing)?

Quantitative easing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    One of the risks..vv

    Capital flight[edit]
The new money could be used by the banks to invest in emerging markets, commodity-based economies, commodities themselves and non-local opportunities rather than to lend to local businesses that are having difficulty getting loans.[76]

Bernanke hinted of scaling back QE as the US economy improves but it remains to be seen as economic data dictates..what we are experiencing is the reaction of foreign market speculators selling shares in PSEI, buy US $ and use it back to get better returns in an otherwise improving US markets..again, it will repeat the cycle once The Fed resumes buying debt papers after a few months because of inflationary or subdued business confidence..in all probability the US govt is buried neck deep in debts it takes guys like Bernanke to do whatever balancing acts needed just the economy dont fall off the cliff in loud thud..
In the meantime we continue to pursue our dreams to become the best of the best in Asean if not in Asia by solving our own problems decisively and with punctuality..get rid of flooding muna..paalisin ang mga nagbabara sa kamaynilaan..ikulong ang mga kunsintidor..!sorry, na OT na tuloy..

Stocks Extend Slide as China Adds to Worries

For investors, there was no place to go on Thursday.

A day after the Federal Reserve roiled Wall Street when it said it could reduce its aggressive economic stimulus program later this year, financial markets around the world plunged. A slowdown in Chinese manufacturing and reports of a squeeze in the world's second-biggest economy heightened worries.

The global selloff began in Asia and quickly spread to Europe and then the U.S., where the Dow Jones industrial average fell 353 points, wiping out six weeks of gains.

But the damage wasn't just in stocks. Bond prices fell, and the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 2.42 percent, its highest level since August 2011, although still low by historical standards. Oil and gold also slid.

"People are worried about higher interest rates," "Higher rates have the ability to cut across all sectors of the economy."

The question now is whether the markets' moves on Thursday were an overreaction or a sign of volatility to come. What is becoming clearer is that traders and investors are looking for a new equilibrium after a period of ultra-low rates, due to the Fed's bond-buying, which spawned one of the great bull markets of all time.
