Smart countries, like Australia, are wary of China and have been doing something about it, at least. But third world Philippines have been embracing the Chinese with open arms and legs. This is just sad.

"Spy chief wanted ban on China telecoms from Australian 5G"

"Mike Burgess, director-general of the Australian Signals Directorate, said his cyber experts had backed the government’s decision in August to bar the two Chinese companies that he described as “high-risk vendors.” It was the first time the secretive agency had disclosed such information.

“My advice was to exclude high-risk vendors from the entirety of evolving 5G networks,” Burgess said in a recent speech released by his office on Tuesday.

Security agencies had previously protected sensitive information and core functions of Australian telecommunications networks by restricting risky vendors to the edges, Burgess said.

“But the distinction between ‘core’ and ‘edge’ collapses in 5G networks. That means that a potential threat anywhere in the network will be a threat to the whole network,” Burgess said.

The next generation of telecommunications networks will be at the top of every countryÂ’s list of critical national infrastructure, he said."

"The warning came as an Australian security think-tank raised concerns on Tuesday about increasing collaboration between Australian universities and ChinaÂ’s PeopleÂ’s Liberation Army scientists on research programs such as hypersonic missiles and navigation technology.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute researcher Alex Joske said in his report that some of the Chinese scientists hid their military backgrounds by claiming to be visiting scholars from non-existent institutions.

Since 2007, the PLA had sponsored more than 2,500 military scientist and engineers to study overseas, the report said."

This administration loves China so much, even the president's economic adviser is a Chinese national. Guess we know who's really the boss of the Philippines. Traitors in Malacanang should be hanged.

Well, he is rather illustrious, and very comparable to other world leaders and thinkers, according to this article.
In short, world class. Pinoy Pride!

Proposed third telecom was given to a Chinese dominated consortium.

The “bidding process” to get the award seemed just for show though. Kinausap lang ata sila Villar & PT&T to tender bids (kuno), even if they really don’t have the resources & capability para lang masabing may bidding na nangyari.

Talagang handed over on a platter na ang Pilipinas sa mga amo niya up North.

afaik Villar pulled out early on.

Had PTT and Tier-1 pulled out, would that have been a failed bidding? That would have been a good strategy if the bidder were serious about gettung back at the DICT. Baka kinausap lang nga to play part in the moro moro.

PTT alleged that the DICT changed the terms after the bid docs were released.

In my mind though...afaik ISM doesn't have that much existing infra, while the other contenders already do. Wouldn't be surprised if ISM will partner or acquire the losers. Kinda hard to tell who would have the upper hand in negotiations though, pahabaan ng pisi yan.

Congrats to the winner, their books will bleed deep bloody red for the next 3-5 years.

And, Globe and PLDT may just welcome them with a price war when they do go online.... you know, for competition and better service to the public.

I don't know kahit gaano pa kabilia or mura niyang bagong telco kahit ibigay pa nila ng free mga phones.

I'd still stay with smart or globe. State owned ang china telecom, so wala na tayong national security.

I wonder if there's really a way to break the telecom monopoly.

Government/State level resources lang ata ang kaya gumawa niyan with the massive infrastructure investment required.
2-3 players might not even genuinely compete against each other but become a cartel (like the big 3 oil companies).

I guess the situation can be compared to that of Telstra in Australia. Ngayon marami na silang telecom providers like Vodaphone, TPG, etc. but Telstra's got a real big advantage because they were there first, and own a majority of the infrastructure. A lot of traffic will still have to pass though their hardware.

Para bang yung Bayantel na clandestinely ginugulangan ng PLDT noon (to kill off the upstart trying give them some competition). Try calling a BT phone from a PLDT phone & vice versa back then... you can barely get through.

    ===
Incidentally... sometime back, Australia ultimately rejected a bid by Chinese telecom company for their national broadband network. They (wisely) realized it could compromise national security. Good for them. Eh dito...

Boo Chanco once wrote about this in his column but in the context of the big 3 oil companies. Back then the government owned Petron. Had it genuinely wanted to break the duopoly, the government could have used Petron to bring down oil prices.

    But well, that didn't happen.

i'd stick with Globe/PLDT as well. Sa inyo na ung China telco. Have fun being under surveillance.

You can thank former President Ramos for that. Andaming kalokohan ding ginawa nung matandang yan under his administration (Amari scandal, then yung mga anomalies in Pampanga, privitization of various government assets etc.) Swabe lang nung dumiskarte. Unlike Erap who was left 'holding the empty bag" after siya ilaglag by his so called kumpadres, the "short one" & her husband, and the balding "closet queen's" cabinet members. Now we've got a "psycho makapili" in office (ang saya!)

Most of us are nobody of importance to be spied upon (wala naman sila makukuha sa atin... na relevant ha), but I completely agree with you. If there's anything you can do to minimize any intrusion of your privacy, gagawin natin right? So iwas (as much as possible) dealing with companies na may questionable/shady business ethics or with ties to "evil" (can't think of another, softer term) governments.

Tekaaa... this Lenovo PC i'm using is of Chinese origin (a Chinese company bought out IBM for this ata), the router/modem's Chinese, Quihoo360 bought large shares of stock in the company of the internet browser I'm using, and this cellphone in my pocket was assembled in China too...

afaik confirmed na ung "spy chip" nila on supermicro servers. It's a wonder why the issue died down suddenly.

We're probably being surveilled on right now. But it's one thing to accept the facts of life, it's a whole different matter to bend over and invite the intrusion.

Same here. I've had the same number for almost 2 decades. I'm not giving it up.

And yes, I don't want to avail that kind of service from China. I will stick to buying China made clothes in Lazada LOL

Palabas lang pala yung supposed tie-up ni 3rd Telco player with a south korean telco (KT) medyo natuwa pa naman ako. Pero as expected chinese na naman ang runner-up. [emoji19]
