Several months after the start a major electric vehicle initiative, a prototype of the winning electric tricycle (e-trike) design was unveiled by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The prototype was created by Japanese developer Itchiro Hatayama based on the design of a winning entry in the DOE’s E-Trike Design competition. The basic requirement for the design was for the vehicle to be a three-wheeled transport and have a maximum capacity of six passengers (excluding driver).

Not bad. The side panels seem to be very thick, though. If that's fiberglass, that will be very heavy, unless it's a fiber-foam sandwich.

Are the windows going to be left open, or will there be plexi or transparent plastic sheet panels for rain protection, when needed?

The maker of the above e-trike is putting up a company in the Phillippines.


Japanese e-vehicle maker ties up with PH firm

Japanese electric vehicle maker Terra Motors Corp has forged a partnership with a local firm for the manufacture of electric vehicles in Laguna for the domestic market and for export, an official said.

Terra Motors chief executive officer Toru Tokushige told reporters in a briefing yesterday that they have partnered with a local firm for the assembly of electric vehicles here.

“We have invested $20 million for the production of electric vehicles here. Most of the investment will go to procurement of parts,” he said.

He noted that the facility in Laguna has a production capacity of 10,000 units per year.

The electric vehicles to be assembled in the site would be for the local market as well as for export.

Tokushige said the firm plans to participate in the bidding for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Department of Energy’s (DOE) e-tricycle project next week.

The project involves the roll-out of 100,000 e-tricycles to local government units until 2016. Tokushige said the firm has already developed a sample e-tricycle unit based on the design provided by the ADB and DOE.

If Terra Motors would be selected for the project, he said the e-tricycles would be manufactured here.

He added other electric vehicles such as electric-bicycles would be produced here.

“We already have orders from customers in Thailand and Indonesia,” he said.

The firm, he added, plans to seek incentives from the Board of Investments for their manufacturing operations. “We are working on the documentation now,” he said further.

And if it does sell well abroad, it would be cheaper to have it made in Thailand.... hehhe

I see some of the old e-trikes (we call it tuktuk) roaming again at BGC. But not as many as it was 4 years ago. I saw most of the e-trikes junked somewhere. I am not sure if they plan to have all of those running again. It's quite annoying on the road because it runs soooooo slow.

That is progress in the Philippines. Make all vehicles to go slower. Waste more gas so you need to buy more. We end up sending more money to the government via taxes.

Cavite-based company bags tax perks for P13.8-million assembly of e-trikes

MANILA - A Filipino-owned company has secured tax and other incentives from the Board of Investments (BOI) for the production of electric tricycles or e-trikes.

In a statement today, BOI said K.E.A. Industrial Corp will invest P13.8 million to produce e-trikes in Bacoor City, Cavite.

The company will churn out 70 units a year and will supply local government units (LGUs) that are part of the Climate-Friendly Cities initiative, in which organic wastes are to be converted into energy to fuel public e-vehicles.

Commercial operations will start in December, and 24 workers will be hired.

K.E.A. will assemble e-trikes with a 120 ampere-hour rechargeable battery that could run up to 100 kilometers within 20 hours. The battery requires up to 10 hours of charging.

The BOI had also awarded tax incentives to another e-vehicles assembler also in Cavite as well as an e-trike project of former auto industry executive Elizabeth H. Lee.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Department of Energy (DOE) last year launched a $500-million program aiming to replace 100,000 gas-fueled tricycles with eco-friendly e-trikes in the next five years to save over $100 million in fuel imports and also cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 260,000 tons a year.
