Mine is more than a decade old. Is it advisable to replace or repair radiators? What maintenance is required if its still dont have visible leaks, Are there antirust additives that will do? TIA

Just make sure to have it flushed regularly, together when you do a tune-up. If your radiator's top part is made of plastic, there is a good chance it will develop cracks on the part where the plastic cover is welded into the metal top. If that happens and you're stuck in traffic, be prepared to deal with an overheating engine.

Most manufacturers recommend you have the cooling system pressure checked when the car has reached five years. Other than that it has a high risk of pressure leak and overheating. Never wait for it to have that predictable problem. These are time changed items

^ can any reputable shop do this pressure testing test on our ride's cooling system or only specialized shops can do this?

If still functions well, no leaks or no visible tendency to crack in near future. No need to replace it, maintain it for a while until you find obvious reason to replace it with a new one. What you must worry most is your radiator hoses and bypass hoses. Radiator coolant has anti rust and corrosion inhibitors aside from anti freeze. Most probably required maintenance is to replace radiator coolant every year. Or read your owners manual the required interval in replacing your radiator coolant.

gumamit ng coolant , kapag kasi tubig lang nag kakaroon ng coroosion ang mga aluminum passageways ng makina.
basta mag complete flush lang kapang ang coolant maitim na ang kulay

Update : Have my old radiator overhauled which took more than 2 hours. Surprised that even if filled with anti coolant and flushing rust builds up overnight. Labor cost * P950 ( Haggled to P800)

How old is the vehicle and how often do you change your coolant?

Had the same thing with our LC80 radiator before. That's why i make it a point to change coolant more often (at least every 40,000kms).

Mine is a 1st Gen Adventure and used to changed coolant every 2 years (average of 20k km per changed) Surprised i was advised by the technician to avoid using coolant and instead to use just distilled water and have a regular monthly flushing daw is enough.

i heard that 'just water only belief' from a mechanic i've chanced once. and never i did came back to him since.

Mines more than 14 years. Cap palang napalitan.. my practice is always 3 parts distilled water to 1 part coolant.. change every 3 change oils.

Although in planning to have it replaced with an aluminum type one. When pocket permits hehe

I had a leaking cap before resulting to minor oveeheating if the radiators not refilled immediately. Had it checked by my trusted radiator repair shop, casa, motorix banawe. Same diagnosis.. cap lang problem.

However, since 14years na daw sasakyan.. palitin nadin daw kinalaunan yung radiator, all were recommending an aluminum type one.. so i researched and yun. 😆

Reminds me of a guy posting in here about radiators years ago ... he was so "anal" about the topic ..... basta radiators are involved.

Your technician is good. He knows. I use distilled water too (Absolute or Wilkins), and I only flushed every 6 months ( vehicle use everyday), or for a year (if the vehicle is often use). I always look and check water in a radiator, and also other point to be check inside the engine bay before starting the engine.

Nabasa ko lang somewhere... Kakainin ng pure distilled water lang yung linings ng radiator sa katagalan.. Forgot ko na kung anong tawag sa type ng corrosion na yun, since water is a solvent unti unti niyang i di disolve yung linings sa loob ng radiator and other surfaces. By adding coolant nababawasan yung effect ng pag corrode ng internals. Meron pa nga sacrificial metal bar na maliit na naka lagay sa radiator cap para siya yung unang kainin ng corrosion at hindi yung lining.

Yung technician na nagsabi na tubig lang ang gamitin sa radiator does not know the function of coolant. Same lang din ng technician na tinatanggal ang thermostat.

Most probably hindi rin nila alam ang ibig sabihin ng PMS, i.e. they only fix a car problem pag andyan na instead of preventing it from actually happening.
