XTO: That's not exactly true, while cooling capacity may be close (similar, due to pressurized system), water alone will not provide lubricity to the water pump.
Common sense lang naman, car manufacturers wouldn't REQUIRE all cars to be filled with the proper coolant mixture if it's not optimal.
People tend to draw their own conclusions din kasi usually based on lowering cost alone.

Coolant also lubricates your cooling system especially the water pump. I've seen too many seized water pumps due to lack of lubrication.
It also prevents corrosion.

May 7th, 2006 09:00 AM #16thanks everyone.
ngayon, convinced na ko it's better to continue using coolant. the past few days i tried using plain water. mabilis bumaba ang level ng water. siguro nga kasi lower ang boiling point pag no coolant. dati rati kahit ilang months hindi nababawasan ang tubig ko sa radiator.
mazdamazda, mga once a year ako magpalit kasi di ako aabot ng 30t km kahit 2 years. but i agree with you, it's worth it.
roxy_gurl, price ng coolant is about P250/liter (prestone).
theveed, oo nga naman, car manufacturers wouldn't do that if it's not optimal. kaya lang minsan hindi sila consistent regarding best practice (eg. synthetic vs non-synthetic oil). pero sa use of coolant, mukha ngang consistent naman sila. so, agree ako sa'yo.
thanks thanks everyone.

May 7th, 2006 02:43 PM #18it's not expensive. no reason not to use it especially since you only replace it every 40k kms.

new toyota cars require coolant change only every 100K kms (or was that 180K kms?)... check ko mamaya under the hood.

Iba ang coolant na gamit ng Toyota (even for our older Land Cruiser).
Always check manufacturer requirements. Most popular is ethylene glycol based coolants. Usually green or bluish.
