For years, I always use 50-50 mixture ng coolant (ethylene glycol). Lately, it has become somewhat expensive. Napag-isip tuloy ako. I know how coolants increase the boiling point of water, etc. Pero, I know people who have not used any coolant for years and they seem to get away with it. How important is it really? Pwede ba anti-rust na lang ilagay ko? It's much less expensive kasi.

my car has been running for 2 years since i got it with just plain water coolant. so far ok naman. always normal operating temperature. kaya lang you have to check ur radiator every now and then para magdagdag ng water kase parang nag e evaporate din sya ng konti. and 1 thing i notice is yung parang residue nan nakadikit sa loob ng radiator. pagtagal tagal siguro mababarahan nun mga butas kaya kailangan ipa overhaul ung radiator. i think its a good thing to add 50% coolant para maganda ang maintenance ng radiator natin.

    coolant is very important...

first, it has anti-rust properties. second, it lowers the boiling point of water.

by the way, how often do you change your coolant-water mixture? it shouldn't be that expensive since it should be done only every 30K km.

if you are using plain water... that would be the cause... those are minerals and whatnots found in plain water... use only distilled water.

Yun 1990 na corolla namin 1.6L parati tap water lang nilalagay namin di naman nagkakaproblema. Although napalitan na yata yun radiator once pero never naman sya nag overheat. Nag over heat lang nung nakalimutan lagyan ng tubig for some time.

for me the same lang as long as pure drinking distilled water ang gamit ko. kahit every year ako magpalit magaan sa bulsa. kumakapit lang sa kalawang yung dye ng coolant mahal pa.

XTO: That's not exactly true, while cooling capacity may be close (similar, due to pressurized system), water alone will not provide lubricity to the water pump.

Common sense lang naman, car manufacturers wouldn't REQUIRE all cars to be filled with the proper coolant mixture if it's not optimal.

People tend to draw their own conclusions din kasi usually based on lowering cost alone.

Coolant also lubricates your cooling system especially the water pump. I've seen too many seized water pumps due to lack of lubrication.

    It also prevents corrosion.

    thanks everyone.

ngayon, convinced na ko it's better to continue using coolant. the past few days i tried using plain water. mabilis bumaba ang level ng water. siguro nga kasi lower ang boiling point pag no coolant. dati rati kahit ilang months hindi nababawasan ang tubig ko sa radiator.

mazdamazda, mga once a year ako magpalit kasi di ako aabot ng 30t km kahit 2 years. but i agree with you, it's worth it.

roxy_gurl, price ng coolant is about P250/liter (prestone).

theveed, oo nga naman, car manufacturers wouldn't do that if it's not optimal. kaya lang minsan hindi sila consistent regarding best practice (eg. synthetic vs non-synthetic oil). pero sa use of coolant, mukha ngang consistent naman sila. so, agree ako sa'yo.

    thanks thanks everyone.

me nabili ako coolant sa blade...
Peak Coolant, P199 per liter , blue bottle made in USA.

better kaya ito sa prestone or caltex?

it's not expensive. no reason not to use it especially since you only replace it every 40k kms.

new toyota cars require coolant change only every 100K kms (or was that 180K kms?)... check ko mamaya under the hood.

Iba ang coolant na gamit ng Toyota (even for our older Land Cruiser).

Always check manufacturer requirements. Most popular is ethylene glycol based coolants. Usually green or bluish.
