According to the trip computer, on average I get 10.5L/100Km mixed, about 40% City, 60% highway (no expressways). In extra City (crawling EDSA at rush hour) the worst I got was 18L/100Km. But that was really bad traffic, 80% of the time in 1st-2nd gear (if this was an a/t). Fuel is Shell Vpower Nitro +.

I'm expecting this to improve a little as it's only got 2,000Kms on it.

    My X-Trail 4x4:

I had a great time driving it for the first week since I got it last week. My impressions:

Handling and Drive: The Eco mode is truly Eco, there is no forward thrust from standstill. This helps in stop and go traffic. Once Eco mode is turned off, the engine is quite preppy and the engine note can be heard when the rpm goes over 3,000. Handling is pretty good, I can feel the Active control stuff during cornering. Only Cons: The steering is uber light, I prefer steering that gives me more feedback.

Comfort: The front seats are indeed comfortable, with great lumbar support. Ours comes with the leather seats, and I must say that the seats are very comfy. Even the second row is comfortable. The front cupholders are also cooled by aircon vents. Noise levels in the cabin is subdued, no road noise enters. It makes me feel like I am in a luxury executive sedan. Not MBenz level, but more like Volvo-ish.

Capacity: The long wheelbase is a big plus, with ample leg room for all rows, including the third row. This SUV can seat 7 adults for short trips. Third row is a bit hot though, they don't have their own aircon vents. 3 pt seatbelts in the 3rd row is a plus.

Fuel Economy: I logged in 6.7KM/L in purely Makati City Driving. This includes numerous idling times since I would tinker around the interior with the aircon running. This is pretty good considering the 2.5L engine and that it is still in the break in period.

Other perks: I get a huge kick out of the Around View Monitor. In reverse, the screen shows the rear and then the Bird's Eye View, which is very useful. PresS THE "DISP" button and the view changes to the front right fender for parking blindspots, and then put the tranny to N or to D, the view shows the front camera. The cameras are quite discreet. Took me a while to find the front camera.

Overall Assessment: Its a nimble car, sized just right for a family of 6 doing mostly city driving. Engine is peppy enough, comfort levels are above average.

Add-ons and other accessories: In the first week I drove it I changed the horn (from tweety bird to something more respectable), and changed the halogen bulbs to NightBreakers. The stock halogens were quite dim. I'll use it for a few months first before going the retrofit route. I also got the deep dish mats from Lamsen. Would most likely get rain visors and change the stock speakers as well.

For now, the X-Trail is sleeping in the garage, grounded by the "no-plate no travel" policy. Luckily, big brother Sorento can pitch in for the meantime.

Nice!! Did you pay for the leather seats upgrade? I find the leather seats of the test drive unit a little on the firm side. Were you able to inquire if you can change the head unit for a 7 inch screen? Where do you plan to upgrade your speakers? Normally new cars especially Nissan brand have few installers.

Hi Sachiel, we added 19K for the leather seat upgrade. It is quite firm, but no different from the leather seats installed in the new Fortuner or even Subarus. I'm taking this as a plus since leather softens in time, so the firmness is to ensure the leather would not sag prematurely.
For the head unit, I don't think it can be upgraded, since it is built-in. I'm not yet decided on the stock speakers, my wife says the sound is ok for her, and this is her car, after all.

Nice review. Could I trouble you for some pictures of the seats? Is the whole upholstery leather or just the seat and backrest?

I'm wondering if the 3rd row seats could be removed and used for additional storage instead. So the boot is flat like the 5 seater version:

I'll rustle up some photos of the leather seats once I get some free time. The whole seat is upholstered in leather, including the 3rd row. The leather used goes well with the stock leather used for the door panels. I understand that the door panels were already done in leather and the leather seats were locally installed.

For the boot, we don't find the slight slant of the 3rd row to be intrusive when it comes to loading cargo. I personally prefer having the 3rd row as an emergency measure in case we need to seat 7-8 pax.

Another feature I failed to mention in my initial review is how the speedo and tach do a full revolution upon start up. I've only seen this in Subarus before. Its useless but still a pretty neat trick that appeals to a car guy like me.

The tach/speedo revolution at start-up is pretty cool, makes it feel like a video game. It also helps that the gauges are gorgeous. Visibility of the dials and MID is great even when the ambient lighting is very bright. This pic doesn't do it justice.

I don't really mind the very slight elevation increase caused by the 3rd row, it's just that we might have more use for the hidden storage that the 5 seaters have. The floor being perfectly flat is just a bonus.

Do you find the leather much harder than the regular upholstery? I'm thinking of upgrading the seats as I always get static shock when I get out of the car. I don't want to look like a douche holding the roof while getting out to avoid the shock. Hehe.

Dealers are offering discounts as stocks of 4x2 (CBU-Japan) arrived. Saw the display in Glorietta and they are offering a 40k discount on the 4x2. 4x4 not readily available daw. Anybody here have any updates on their 4x2? Thinking of getting one specially now that there's a discount and there's one month free amort of BPI. For those who have the 4x2, anybody had: fogs installed? (Lamson is selling them for 9k but switch is push button, not the stalk. Maybe later on it would be easier to find the stalk switch); replaced the head unit? And installed a back up camera? (Saw a 7" OEM unit online made by Bosch around $500); installed parking sensors?; replaced horns? Installed step boards? (BMW type) thanks in advance.

I also hope they can change the seats of the 4x2 to leather even if full price. The 19k for the 4x4 is "subsidized daw" by the plant as per the agent of Nissan (formerly UMC on pasong tamo)

And thanks MrGunn for the review.

Question to X-trail owners: There were some areas of the interior (steering wheel, etc.) where they put in questionably tacky-thin plastic. Doesn't bother you even a tad bit?

Nissan Shaw has a display unit of the 4x2 in leather seats which is quite good when I sat on it. Better than the one in Mantrade. They installed it themselves as their accessories dept is shared with Chevrolet, the problem is I forgot to ask how much. You can inquire with them. As far as the head unit, the casa still don't allow mods as it is a CBU unit. That's the bad part of integrated units.

i asked in Alabang and leather seats cost 50k+ naman daw. i test drove the 4x2, ok naman. light steering and soft suspension. medyo plastic-y nga yung feel ng interiors pero i think you'll get over it.

Mahal ng leather seats nila! Will ask other upholsterers (leder interia or leather one) magkano. Wala naman electricals na magagalaw para mag void warranty.

Favor naman sa mga naka 4x2. Can you please take a picture of the MID showing a song track or station ID? Asking Lamson to verify if changing the head unit (to a touchscreen OEM or plug and play head unit) will not affect the stereo info seen on the MID. Thanks in advance!
