    in my opinion,
we might be giving the background scenario too much credit as the cause of the eventual outcome.

self-un-alivement among students is not exclusive to any one school or university or course.
and it is more common than we imagine.
"they just keep it under wraps."
there is strong stigma against it, kasi.

and yes, pathologic depression is genetic, 50% of the time. it is a true illness.
many times, there do not seem to be an identifiable trigger that brings about the downward spiral.

i asked a classmate about depression as an illness.
    he says,
"in our society, psychological and psychiatric illness are poorly understood outside of the circle of the specialty, even doctors. and there is a stigma associated with it. thus, it is not talked about too much. and worse, itina-tanggi to death na meron silang kamag-anak na may sakit nito. either they refuse to admit it, or they honestly do not recognize the illness. yes, it can be managed successfully, with the person living a normal life and eventually die of old age... but the person has first to recognize his condition, and cooperate with the treatment. and yes, support from friends and relatives also helps considerably."

in recent years, there are new information indicating the organic basis for psychological or psychiatric illness. the lesions in the brain are identified, the malfunction identified and understood... somewhat..., and the pharmacologic agent ("the drug of choice"), formulated and made available in the market.
