For entry level work of ordinary companies, perhaps.

But all top companies in the Philippines (both local and multinational) that I know of have a high concentration of graduates from top universities. This becomes more true as you climb up the ranks into middle and top management.

as is true of every institution,
the chaff fall by the wayside, on the cart's way to the top.

MATLAB is more of a data analysis tool. Python is a lot more akin to a full programming suite.

Wait. I just remembered, matlab ba yung pang circuit test din? If i remeber correctly, i used this when i was in college in one of our thesis...

From what I know, MATLAB can do 3D modeling, simulation, and others including automation.

For starters, numerical methods are initial practices for you to start learning MATLAB, i.e., calculation for "e", matrices, etc. Good for you, you experienced using this during your college days.

Someone said Phyton can do the same thing and is an open source software. I'm not sure of 3D modeling.

Regarding this topic, anyone here knows how to use refprop either with MATLAB or Phyton? I'm willing to pay for the service. This should be very easy to someone who really knows about this. It is considered as a work for an undergrad. Unfortunately for me, I'm no longer up to the task and it is really a great effort (with the emphasis, GREAT EFFORT) for me to recall calculations in Thermodynamics and Refrigeration theories.

Matlab can do a lot of things: graphing, data manipulation, etc. But it was really made for solving complex equations (specifically large matrices, MAT is for matrix).

Thats the beauty of Python. Its free. Thats why most academic and R&D institutions are moving to Python. Matlab is very expensive and you still have to buy the toolboxes. Python can also do 3D and simulations.

I thought MAT is for math... and I was so surprised to learn that you can do calculus with it even by using variables. For example, derivative of sin x will give you an output of cos x. It is so difficult to do this in C, and that's the only language I know that was taught when I was in college.

Well thats the drawback of free, libre, open source like C and Python (still easier than the former though). Its hard to use vs something paid for like Matlab.

Anyway off topic na. To bring it back IMO, school matters pa rin especially for new grads. In my experience, iba talaga ang grad coming from say UP vs some other school. Kahit madaminh bagsak, andun pa rin yung impression na, if this guy had the tenacity to persevere and graduate in such a high stress environment then this guy can do more. Even years down the road, I found UP grads to be more reliable than others.

Just realized, over 80% of the folks over at work came from the top 3 universities.

    UPD - 28%
    ADMU - 42%
    DLSU - 10%
    Others - 19%

Surprisingly, after DLSU, ADDU (Ateneo de Davao) and ADZU (Ateneo de Zamboanga) were the next most common schools. These are mostly our colleagues based in Visayas/Mindanao.

Grabe, it's been almost 4 years na since the inquiry ng TS dito. Ano na kaya ang naganap sa college life niya? 🤔

Kakabasa ko lang kasi ng whole thread kanina up to the last page eh. Maraming magulang gusto makapagtapos ang mga anak nila ng college and then some old folks will also say nasa diskarte na din yan kung paano ka aasenso sa buhay, lalo na ngayon. Every year, nagtataas ng tuition fees ang mga universities.

Probably. Because most jobs require a college degree. Magkakatalo kung saan ka galing.

I'd like to know the stats from top/prestigious companies that do not use Jobstreet in hiring

Which Schools Produce the Highest-Paid Employees According to JobStreet Data?.
While there’s variation depending on position, the top ranking schools are fairly consistent
    By Entrepreneur Staff | Jul 18, 2017

While it’s usual to ask a work colleague or even a casual acquaintance what school they graduated from, it’s never polite to ask them how much their salary is. But it’s one of the things we’ve thought about at one point or another: how much do graduates of our school typically earn compared to others?

The closest we’ll probably get to a good answer is the data in this infographic, which are based on the averages of self-reported salaries of users of JobStreet.com Philippines, the country’s leading online jobs portal. The online job site has tens of thousands of users in the Philippines, most of whom voluntarily report information potentially useful for recruiters and future employers such as the school they graduated from, their college course, current job and current pay.

By processing the vast amounts of information to extract averages per school across various positions or employment levels, Entrepreneur Philippines and JobStreet.com Philippines were able to generate rankings of the users’ schools. Given that there are hundreds of schools in the database, and it’ll be difficult to display all of them, we limited the list to the 15 schools with the most graduates among JobStreet.com users.

Instead of a single ranking of the schools, we present a list across six employment levels or positions from fresh graduates to top executives. The rankings vary depending on the position but some of the schools are consistently in the top 4 or 5 of the lists. (See infographic)

To give readers an idea of the possible factors behind the rankings, we also present information on the top five specializations or fields of work reported by the schools’ graduates who are in the JobStreet database. One could see that while customer service is the No.1 field in most of the schools, some institutions specialize in information technology or engineering.

As mentioned, the rankings presented in the infographic are based exclusively on self-reported average salaries of JobStreet.com users. Thus, they may not be representative of the actual salaries received by the schools’ graduates in the broader work force. For that, we will have to wait for somebody to conduct an actual survey of a representative sample of the various schools’ graduates or alumni and ask them how much they’re making.
How does one compute for average monthly salary? Lahat naman 13th month diba? Annual/13 or 12?

Data from our Office of Placement puts the average salary of Ateneo fresh grads at 25k.

I find the data from Jobstreet inaccurate because it's too low. But if you look at the FB page, most comments say that it's too high. [emoji848]

Monthly rate is usually computed as your annual rate (incl. all guaranteed bonuses, not just 13th month) divided by 12. But some people also compute the other way around - monthly rate x 12 for the annual, then add all the bonuses.

Based on the latest survey, PUP tops the list of preferred schools again. But their data is based on Jobstreet, and in that Jobstreet survey, the highest paying fresh grad job is 27k. [emoji23][emoji23]

I can tell you with 100% certainty that there are first jobs that pay much more than 27k and the people who get those jobs aren't mostly PUP grads. [emoji6]
