Sorry for bumping this thread but I want to hear the opinions of tsikoteers about this...

What are the job options if your get kicked out from a "top 3 university" then finished from "some not so prestigious university"?

What are your options if your get kicked out from a "top 3 university?"

I actually shifted from my original course because I realized I made a wrong decision but my parents had me stay long enough to accumulate many units of failures.

Now, with my present course, I'm still learning to love it and learn it. My number of failed units is deadly already and is quite near the maximum allowed number of failed units (80% from my previous course, cannot remove it na). So yeah, I'm just having a hard time with some certain subjects and I just want to prepare for the worse. I really hope though to keep the failures low and graduate from this university.

As pointed earlier, it's not about the school but it's about you. There will be advantages coming from those schools but in the end, it will be up to you.

One option you have is to finish your Master's degree with a grade of A. At least, this is your transcript that you will present instead of your undergraduate degree.

The list can go on. Let's hear out other recommendations from our friends here.

That I think is part of history... I don't even know how it works. All I remember is that there were five major languages.

I learned Cobol when I joined a global IT consulting company and I spent 10 years of my career mastering Cobol and all the related mainframe tools to help out the company's clients. Heck, I was even part of the SME group of that company teaching Cobol to new hires and IT college grads got the surprise of their lives.

Cobol and all the mainframe/midrange software tools are pretty much alive. Banks, credit cards, and financial services run on mainframe or midrange platforms. They are very secure and robust systems. IBM makes a lot money providing support services to companies that rely on such platforms.

All the while I thought it is part of history. What I usually hear are the likes of MATLAB. My son said he doesn't know COBOL except in history, so I thought it is really part of history. I wonder why it is not included in computer subject?

Cobol is not the cool thing that kids want. It is not taught in schools anymore. Most of the new kids want to learn web apps, mobile apps, or cloud apps.

However, consulting companies make a ton of money providing Cobol resources from the Philippines and India to help out big companies on their mainframe applications. I was in my mid 20s when I went to Northeast US to help out in the migration of a bank's old mainframe system to a newer mainframe platform. IT employees of that bank were surprised how young we were. A lot of them are career IT employees who are already grandparents.

Always remember, every time you withdraw or deposit money in your bank, a group of Cobol resources are working to keep those bank systems running. Even with the advent of online banking, these systems are just layers to the core banking systems which are housed on mainframes and midrange platforms.

I see... is COBOL running under DOS or Linux? Another thing, what language do you recommend that I suggest to my son to study aside from what they teach in school?

I think we are out of topic here, considering that the guy earlier was asking for an alternative with his dilemma.

A mainframe and midrange platform has its own operating system. The most common I know of is IBM z/OS which is used by a number of big companies. It has enough capability for integration with web applications and other common applications. Mainframe and their operating systems are quite expensive and a chore to maintain. Most banks has moved to midrange platforms (AS400) for ease of maintenance.

If you want your son to be successful in IT, get them into ERP platforms (SAP, Oracle, Netsuite, etc.) or data analytics or mobile apps or cloud apps. The best way is to have them trained in college on electronics-automation heavy courses (IT, CompSci, ECE, EE), process engineering (Management Engg or Industrial Engg), logic processing (Math, Stat), or financial fundamentals (Accounting). I mentioned Accounting as ERP platforms are based on the basics of financials (accounts payable, ledgers, purchase orders, etc.).

Another ignorant assumption on my part, I thought OS/2 by IBM is obsolete.

Thank you for your time. I'll ask my son to read this.

Yeah, it is. People use Windows nowadays.

OS/2 is for personal computers. IBM uses different operating systems for mainframe (z/OS) and midrange (System i) computers.

if you are going to build your company, no one will check your qualifications first, before giving you the go signal.
but if you are going to work for someone, that someone will first want to know what you can do. and that includes the school diploma.

If not then i think you will be the least among the applicants, makakasabayan mo yung mga applicants na mangagaling sa reputable schools at higit sa lahat ano ang panama mo sa mga applicants na may exprience na?

unless otherwise you are a Board/Bar Exam Topnotcher.

Yup. I think it matters more nga for future entrepreneurs to go to top schools. That's where you build yoir network. Mga grade school or high school or college friends mo.

Its the discipline to work after graduation and not choosy sa work or namimili ng trabaho ang mabilis na hire.
