IMHO, the philippines lost a lot of face here, plain and simple

I believe they were able to board the ships and take pictures of the catch. Sana nga kinonfiscate na dun mismo. The Phil government should have supported and asserted that. Tutal, against international and national law yung paghuli sa mga endangered species.

*Altis6453 : pag pumalag sila, it's inevitable that force will be used. Tutal, illegal naman ang catch (the international community might understand that). The mere fact that they were able to board it shows that it the Phil navy had the upper hand. Their hands are tied.

Its a pity that we can't seem to do anything because we are under the shadow of a bully.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Link: China sends ship back to Scarborough, says Del Rosario | Inquirer Global Nation

MANILA, Philippines—Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario said China sent back a ship to the disputed Scarborough Shoal Saturday afternoon and had harassed a Filipino civilian vessel, after the week-old standoff appeared to have eased. Hours after reporting that all but one Chinese vessel had left the waters off Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) by Friday, Rosario said one of the larger vessels later returned.

This boosted the Chinese presence to two vessels, while a Chinese aircraft also arrived and made fly-bys above a Philippine Coast Guard vessel stationed in the area, he said.A Chinese ship also harassed a Philippine-registered vessel conducting a scientific survey, del Rosario said without elaborating. In a statement Saturday evening, Del Rosario decried that the latest development came even as he and Chinese Ambassador Ma Keqing had agreed not to take any action that would escalate tension in the area.

“As I said earlier, my meeting with Ambassador Ma last night (Friday) resulted in a stalemate. Notwithstanding, Ambassador Ma had asked if we could commit to no surprises until we meet again, to which I agreed,” Del Rosario said. “It appears that there is an element that is lacking in our negotiations. I seek a deeper element of trust from our Chinese friends,” Del Rosario said. The crisis started Sunday when the Philippines found eight Chinese fishing boats in the area, which the Philippines claims as its territory.
A Philippine Navy warship was preparing to arrest the Chinese fishermen for poaching but China dispatched three civilian vessels to take turns blocking the Philippine ship. Talks between del Rosario and the Chinese ambassador to Manila, Ma Keqing, to resolve the dispute went nowhere according to the Philippine side.

However, earlier Saturday del Rosario said all eight fishing vessels as well as two of the three larger Chinese vessels blockading the Philippine forces had fled the area, leaving one vessel left for each of the two claimants. The Filipino official did not specify whether the alleged fresh Chinese reinforcements had arrived Friday or Saturday.
Del Rosario said the civilian Filipino vessel that was harassed was conducting an “archaeological survey” and that the people on board included nine French citizens.
However he did not specify where the alleged harassment occurred.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez did not immediately answer queries sent by Agence France-Presse regarding the Filipino civilian vessel.
The military has said a Philippine coast guard vessel remains near the shoal, about 230 kilometers (140 miles) west of the country’s main island of Luzon, monitoring the Chinese activity. The head of Philippine military forces in the area, Lieutenant General Anthony Alcantara said tension in the area had been “defused” by the departure of most of the Chinese boats. However del Rosario also said it was “regrettable” the fishing boats were allowed to leave without the Philippines confiscating their catch of endangered species like giant clams, corals and live sharks.

The Philippines says the shoal is in its territory, well within the country’s 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, as recognized by international law.
However China has insisted the shoal is Chinese territory as part of its claim to all of the West Philippine Sea, even waters up to the coasts of other countries.
Aside from the Philippines and China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei also claim all or parts of the waters as their own.

The Philippines and Vietnam complained last year of increasingly aggressive acts by China in staking its claim to the South China Sea.
However this week’s standoff is the highest-profile in recent years.

the main reason why those senators voted na paalisin ang US dito is bec. during the cold war, Russia allotted a nuclear warhead aimed at us. nun panahon kasi ng cold war, Russia aimed the same the number of missiles to every US ally lol. ang maganda sa ibang US allies, they too have capability to counter the threat by alloting their respective missiles to Kremlin. eh tayo, walang missile whatsoever. if these superpowers engage, who do you think will they make an example of, eh din yun wala capability to counter the threat. Russia can wipe out the Philippines in one launch to bluff the US, and then bigla nag-diplomacy sila. sabihin ng US Pres to Russia, ok that was close, it's good na we went back sa negotiating table. eh tayo pano na abo na lang, collateral damage.

the thing is during that time even us Filipinos, whether politician or ordinary citizen can't be assured if the Americans did really build an underground nuclear missile silo in Subic. if I remember correctly, even when the Americans left Subic and Clark, Russia refused to redirect that missile, so are we to believe that the Americans did really leave us? I think not hehe

    ----------------------

now regarding this security threat, as an inferior nation, we can always negotiate with an advantage. like for example, we portray that we are for sale or for bid between these 2 superpowers: America and China. by delaying our decision to choose which side, we have the advantage, and we still continue to live, at least peacefully.

wag nyo masyado i-judge ang mga politico natin, I'd do the same too if I were in that position. ang kailangan lang naman mabuhay na maayos kahit hiram lang, and our ability to extend those privileges from both superpowers makes us even more superior than them. kasi sila kelangan pa ng mga warships, big weapons etc etc. tayo laway lang

Hanggat mahina tayo as a country tanggapin natin ang bato satin ng mga kapitbahay natin, ganun talaga yun. Wag na tayo mag ambisyon kahit pride dahil talagang wala tayo iba batbat. yung South Korea nga pinalubog ng Nokor isang barko nila wala rin sila nagawa dahil pag pumalag sila magkakabanatan diyan at maaring sumali China in the side of Nokor.

Kung ganun ka, nobody will help you when you are in trouble.

Because of the Philippines inability to commit to the US cause, no one will help you when the Chinese boats start coming to your shore.

And the Chinese know it.

Hmmm... hate to burst your bubble but given the dimension of those missiles, they'll hit us before we even get the chance to fire back.

Against a military like China, you'd want the 48N6 and 40N6 combo

Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

The superpowers are not as dumb as you think. As for the politicos, some were after the pogi points which translates to votes, while some are leftists with their own agenda.

Hehe may nag rally daw kanina sa tapat ng US embassy, nirereklamo daw nila yung VFA at yung military excercise natin with the US.. hehe o san ka pa..Mga tarantado talaga.
