They should speak english. Its an international pageant and besides if u cant speak english dont dare join. Maybe janina was so busy beautifying herself and forgot to beautify her brain. Kakainis lng kasi, ano ba natutunan nya sa pag aaral nya, simple sentence construction hindi magawa. Stage fright should not be an excuse, the question is so simple that needs a very simple answer. Bulakbol ata to sa klase......

+1 kina Mr. nicolodeon (#69), Mr. jedi (#77), Mr. xTrememan (#81) and
    Ruffa Gutierrez.

Pero turn-off ako dun sa Geometry/Geography thing, assuming na talagang nangyari.

Pagbigyan na lang muna, bigyan natin ng chance para mag-improve. For me TRO muna sa further judgement.

dream daw ni Janina maging broadcaster... gosh..

anyways, bata pa naman sya so may time pa sya ayusin yung english nya. however, sana nag-tagalog na lang sya muna during the pageant kasi nakakahiya talaga...

sabagay si Ms. Teen USA siguro idol nya.

howard stern just played her clip on (satellite) radio but didnt dwell on it too much. and in fairness, they said we (the u.s.) is not any better and played a clip of miss teen usa struggling with her answer as well . howard just concluded that when one is hot, one tend to get away with a lot of things.

i can tell that she got nervous responding to the question, but it is still lame to make an excuse (17, first time) and consider them an answer.

I dare not assume I know for a fact what the basic criterias international beauty pageants have. All I know is they will be ambassadors of goodwill and beauty, attending speaking engagements, interview and doing charity works among other things. To be fluent and articulate in english would be a plus to bag the title. If not, that's what translators are there for.
Since she will be representing our country, it would be comforting to know if she could handle herself well and stay composed under pressure and make us proud.
Yes she is still young at 17, and yes there are far worse american contestants in previous pageants. But she can do better next time. Let's give her a chance to redeem herself. She will need the support of her fellow Filipinos.

Ugh. This is almost starting to sound like the propaganda we were force-fed when I joined the service looong ago. "When a-broad, you represent this coun-try. All eyes are u-pon you. Put your best foot for-ward. Your conduct and professionalism reflect greatly upon yourself, the service, and this country" Me rolls eyes and puts finger in mouth to go baaaarf. "Yes, daddy"

I guess I'm in the minority then. I hate the analogy. But, a beauty pageant is really nothing more than a dog and pony show. That's why feminists/man-haters/he-girls want to put an end to them.

Bah. If its professionalism people want, here's what I consider professional: a weather goddess

    Or Hillary Andrews:

As for beauty pageants on tv, I don't even have the volume on. I watch it while listening to tunes. It's all in the visuals.

She just begged the question.

She has plenty of time to train herself. Beauty, effortless, dahil she has makeups, beauty products, and stuff. But cultivating your brain takes some time.

I also have to agree that puro beauty lang naman ang criteria that is why it is called beauty contest. But somehow, we are looking at the totality of the contestant, not just her looks.

    Just my 2 cents.

PS: That's why I don't watch beauty contest.

Please do not single out Janina, as there are prominent English users who also ERR in their native tongue, as in the following examples:

    QUOTE:

Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?
Answer: "I would not live forever, because we should not live forever,

"Half this game is ninety percent mental." -- Philadelphia Phillies manager, Danny Ozark Danny was never really good at the stats part of baseball]

"We apologize for the error in last week's paper in which we stated that Mr. Arnold Dogbody was a defective in the police force. We meant, of course, that Mr. Dogbody is a detective in the police farce." -- Correction Notice in the Ely Standard, a British newspaper

"If somebody has a bad heart, they can plug this jack in at night as they go to bed and it will monitor their heart throughout the night. And the next morning, when they wake up dead, there'll be a record." -- Mark S. Fowler, FCC Chairman [and they'll cut off your food stamps]

(And below:- how stupid do manufacturers think English users are!!!!

    Subject: Instructions

In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through
stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods. On a
Sears hairdryer: "Do not use while sleeping." (And that's the only time I have to work on my hair.)

On a bag of Fritos: "You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside." (the shoplifter special?)

On a bar of Dial soap: "Directions: Use like regular soap." (And that would
    be how??...)

On some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving suggestion: "Defrost."(but, it's
    "just" a suggestion.)

On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom): "Do not turn upside down."
    (well...duh, a bit late, huh!)

On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding: "Product will be hot after heating." (...and you thought????..)

On packaging for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body." (but wouldn't this save me more time?)

On Boot's Children Cough Medicine:"Do not drive a car or operate machinery
after taking this medication." (We could do a lot to reduce the rate of
construction accidents if we could just get those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.)

On Nytol Sleep Aid: "Warning: May cause drowsiness." (and...I'm taking this
    because???....)

On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use only." (as
    opposed to...what?)

On a Japanese food processor: "Not to be used for the other use." (now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious.)

On Sunsbury's peanuts: "Warning: contains nuts." (talk about a news flash)

On an American Airlines packet of nuts: "Instructions: Open packet, eat
nuts." (Step 3: maybe, uh...fly Delta?)

On a child's superman costume: "Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly." (I don't blame the company. I blame the parents for this one.)

On a Swedish chainsaw:"Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or
genitals." (..was there a lot of this happening somewhere?)

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's your turn to spread the "stupidity"
and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to (maybe even a chuckle)...in other words send it to everyone. We all need to smile every once in a while.

    "Janina, hindi ka nag-iisa!!!"

I saw her 2-3 weeks ago sa show ni Jessica Soho...she was explaining na kaya palpak ang sagot niya kasi all she heard was "family and "pageant" lang daw from the question eh since maingay yun mga audience eh hinde niya narinig mabuti yun quetion, kaya daw hinde niya nasagot...kaya daw niya sinabi na "family? ,oh my Gosh!" something to that effect
I was thinking at that time "plausible" ang explanation niya and the fact that during that interview she was so relaxed kaya nasagot naman niya ng maayos yun mga tanong ni Jessica in Tagalog..so last part na ng segment niya and last question na...

maniniwala na sana ako na kinabahan lang talaga siya during the Q&A portion ng pageant...

but when Jessica Soho asked her the cliche pageant question "what would you rather have? beauty or brain?"

Janina answered with oozing confidence "SAME!!!" and she went on explaining her reason/s...

    hinde ko na narining...

    nilipat ko na yun channel.....
