Is New Tucson Worth Its Price?

Hyundai Motor finally took the wraps off its new compact SUV Tucson ix last week. The latest version of the South Korean auto giant's popular model is loaded with all kinds of upgrades, company officials claim, but will they be enough to drive Hyundai to the top of the global small SUV market?

The new Tucson will get its first international exposure at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany next month, where auto critics from all over the world will not only come to see and dissect Hyundai's latest but also those of its competitors.

And they're going to be checking whether Hyundai's all-new crossover vehicle lives up to all the hype in the run-up to the 280-billion-won ($225 million) release.

In terms of the car's overall specs, the upgrade offers improvements right off the bat.

Showing off a totally redesigned exterior styling, the next generation Tucson is powered by a 2.0 liter engine, available in both diesel and gasoline, respectively pumping out 184 horsepower and 166 horsepower.

Coupled with Hyundai's 6-speed automatic gearbox, the coupe-style SUV promises better performance and fuel economy. Plus, the variant offers a full range of freshly added features, such as a panoramic glass roof, hill-start assist control, vehicle dynamic control (VD), downhill brake control (DBC) and rear-view camera.

All of these changes have jacked up the new Tucson's price in the domestic market by 2 to 4 million won compared to its predecessor. The vehicle will retail between 21.3 million won to 28 million won.

But do South Korean consumers, who got the very first look at the Tucson ix, think the upgrade is worth the price?

Hours after the car was unveiled last Tuesday, local auto buffs debated on blogs whether Hyundai was calling for too much for its latest SUV.

Dozens of consumers expressed frustration over the car maker's compulsive price increase.

``You don't see Honda, Toyota and Nissan ramping up their price in such huge margins every time they release a new model,'' said one user under the name Scarlet, who added that a car maker shouldn't pass on the cost of research & development to consumers.

``It's the company's obligation to offer new products to buyers, so why do we have to pay extra for every upgrade they make?''

Although bloggers echoed each other that the upgraded Tucson has been significantly improved from the previous model, many said they would rather opt for a foreign car instead of paying Hyundai's price.

The Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue were among some of the foreign brands that were preferred over the Tucson. The Escape and Rogue retail here for 29 million won and 34 million won, respectively.

``Honda, Ford and Nissan are probably secretly thanking Hyundai for raising Tucson's price,'' wrote another user by the name Kang, who stressed that one of Hyundai's biggest advantages over its overseas competitors is still the price factor.

Despite such criticism, the world's fifth-largest auto firm claims that the Tucson ix is going to set the trend for the segment and regain sales leadership in the small SUV market.

``The global SUV market is gradually heating up again as the global economic downturn is showing signs of coming to an end," said Shin Young-dong, head of domestic sales for Hyundai Motor.

He said that the Tucson ix will shine in the global market as well as the domestic market with its high-end features and improved style.

The company plans to begin selling the Tucson ix overseas starting next year. In the meantime, Hyundai hopes to put 16,000 ixs on the road in the remaining four months of this year.

21.3M Won is roughly 700k to 800k Pesos excluding taxes and other charges. Sa palagay niyo Sir Tidus, meron pa kayang New Tucson na di aabot ng 1M? Like sa current model Tucson CVVT M/T na 938k to 943k lang.

Anyone who knows kelan ang launching ng New Tucson dito sa atin?

Kung presyo ng sasakyan ang pag-uusapan, mas hamak na mas mura ang sasakyan dito sa Korea kesa sa atin, which is obvious naman dahil produkto nila yan eh. Yung tagalinis nga ng office namin, merong sasakyan at yung aking typist/interpreter, naka SUV new model na sta. fe. However, the cost of fuel here is much much more expensive than in 'pinas. Sorry po, O.T. na yata ako.
