Germans also do that in the autobahn.

They shouldn't be camping out in the passing lane in the first place.

Thus, it is the law-abiding ones that get in-convinienced, or frustrated, in any situation. Why should I be when I am the one following the law?

driving habits in pinas is getting worst. isa sa pinagmulan n'yan madaling pagkuha ng driver's license dito, basta may pambayad ayos na! kaya wala pang kaalam-alam sabak na agad either bagito or tanga talaga. natututo na lang pag naaksidente na, masuwerte kung buhay pa!

ang mahirap yung iba, matatanda na nung magka-lisensya, no appearance pa! kaya ayun mahirap nang pasunurin even simpleng traffic rules sasamahan pa ng kayabangan. nakow! naloko na tayo

I've observed the Germans on autobahn when I had a chance to go ther a few years ago. They are very 'anal' about the fast lane. But one thing I noticed is, they rarely flash their lights to say they're coming from behind which is a good thing. They always give a chance for the car in front of them, to get back to the slow lane which is very rare in the Philippines.

    --------------------------

Top 10 Rules of a Twisted Pinoy Driver

After a stressful hour driving in the streets of metro manila today (yes, in only 1 hour!), here's what I noticed on other fellow drivers...

    1. Honk Your Horn Frequently
    - Pressing the horn button is like pressing the Nitrous button -- it adds HP! Remember, more HP = more power! The louder the horn, the better!

    2. Remove Obstacles At Front Tires
    - Small rocks or microscopic pebbles at front tires is like a hump on the road. Avoid it by turning your steering wheel right or left swiftly or just simply change lane quickly (to avoid those rocks). Remember, humps slow you down! Don't loose that precious HP you've gained from honking your horn!

    3. Stop at RED lights
    - the purpose of stoplights is to stop - meaning if it is red, it means STOP. if it is not, then don't loose that precious HP! Go faster (regardless if it is green or yellow). If you see a flashing yellow light from a car in the other lane in your front, that means that driver wants YOU to go faster (Again, honk your horn to gain HP). Remember, RED means stop, other color means go faster!

    4. Stay At The Fast Lane
    - If you stay at the fast lane, that means you are driving fast (regardless of speed). If others are honking at you, just remember that they are just adding HP to speed up. Even if you are just going 40kph or lower on the fast lane, remember that you are still driving FAST (coz you're in the fast lane)! Get it? Good!

    5. Flash (Your) Lights
    - Let them (other drivers or pedestrians) notice that you are coming. If you don't want to flash your lights, turn your headlights up bright (even if it is night or day) to inform others that you are coming (at fast speed). Save power by adjusting your dim light higher so there's no more hassle to toggle the switch. Remember, one hand on the steering wheel, the other on the horn button, not on the toggle switch!

    6. Turn Up The Volume
    - Turn your stereo volume up high. If you have subs installed, the better. Two or more subs - much much better! Why? Coz when the subs pump up, your vehicle also pumps up HP.
How? The magnetic effect of the loudspeakers at the trunk magnetizes the fuel in your fuel tank. Magnetized fuel causes lean burn. Lean burn equals more power to the engine. More power equals more HP!
One more thing, the bass beat reduces the weight of your car by bouncing up and down. Lesser weight means faster acceleration!

    7. Be Efficient
    - If all lanes are used, always go to the next available lane -- the incoming lane.
Remember, to gain speed, you need space, and if there's no more space, then be efficient -- use the incoming lane.

    8. Follow The Leader
    - If you see an ambulance, firetruck, presidential escort, or the like -- follow them quickly! These vehicles have sirens that adds precious HP that horns cannot give.
Tailgate as close as possible. These vehicles run the fastest speed in the streets of metro manila, and if you're the one following them, then your vehicle is also one of the fastest vehicles out there (same principle as the vehicle in the fast lane).

    9. Dark Tints, Black-Painted Hood, Tinted Plates, Stickers...
    - If you want to tint your vehicle, use the darkest tint available in the market.
Why? coz when lights goes into the cabin, it causes heat and greenhouse effect inside your vehicle. This causes your aircon to function more and adds more load to your engine.
Paint your engine hood with black paint. Why? Dark tints have dark, almost black color that deflects light. Put black paint on your engine hood to have the same effect as tints. Don't let light enter your engine. Light causes heat, and a hot engine looses power.
Don't forget to tint your plates too to deflect those lights and cause more heat on the radiator and/or condenser (in front) or at the trunk (at the back).
Put as many stickers as you can around the vehicle (windshield, door sides, quarter panel, hood, trunk, etc.). It deflects light.
Remember, light causes heat. Deflect heat, and in simplier terms -- Add HP by adding more stickers!

    10. (For Taxis, PUJs and Buses) - The Customer Is Always Right
    - If you're an unoccupied taxi, a jeepney or a bus driver, always look out for a customer.
Even if the customer is in the no loading/unloading zone or at the corner of the street, go swiftly to the customer (you may need to change lanes quickly) and make a sudden stop in front of the customer. This is to show the customer that your vehicle is fast, and can get to the destination in no time.
Forget about other drivers at the rear, just remember that the customer is always right (not the other drivers)!

    tandaan ... wag tutularan! hehehe

Sir, hindi na po 'fast lane' iyon ngayon. It is now called the 'Passing Lane'. Running at the speed limit does not give us the divine right to set up camp there.

Btw, flashing your high beams is an internationally recognized symbol of one's intention to pass. I don't know why Pinoys are peeved about it. That is why the control stalk has a 'FLASH TO PASS' (that is how it is even described in some owner's manuals) function on it. In the Autobahn, they flash only if the vehicle in front WILL NOT yield (which is more often the case here). The 'big boys' (the ones in souped up Porsches and hot rod Benzes) also flash their left turn signals (visible from the driver's side external mirror of vehicle in front) to indicate that they are haulin' *ss and that the one in front should move out of the passing lane ASAP.

If you get flashed, there's no harm in moving aside. Believe me as I used to drive one of the slowest vehicles on the road (top speed 100kph) and have gotten pretty much used to letting everyone pass. The only time I step into the fast lane is to overtake slower vehicles or those gravel trucks that pelt me with their cargo. And if you cannot immediately vacate the passing lane, the next best thing to do would be to flash your right hand turn signal to indicate that you have recognized their intention to pass and will yield at the next possible opportunity.

I know na marami ngang t*nga sa daan. But I think we should at least try to do the right things ourselves.

Btw, people who set up camp in the left lane are not called LEFT LANE BANDITS for nothing.

JagXtrm, nice article, i've read that somewhere. Otep, i've no problem with flashing lights to indicate you want to pass. The issue here is driving with BRIGHT lights kahit same speed na kayo. Man, ang sakit sa mata on the rearview mirrors di ba? or you rarely experience this because you are driving a pajero (tall ride height)? I just find it inconsiderate na tutukan ka nang constant bright.

I drive in the NLEX everyday - as what OTEP said - it is a passing lane and not a fast lane.

Even when I am doing just between 80-90kph (tipid mode) in the rightmost lane - I can still pass many vehicles camped out in the leftmost lane. That's how slow some of these passing lane huggers are.

If you don't flash the vehicle in front of you - chances are that it won't give way, believe me. It will be just content to camp out there thinking that the passing lane is the safest route (where in fact it is not since the runoff / shoulder area is farther when you experience an emergency).

Issue pa din iyan kahit mataas ang sasakyan. Because from a distance, the whole front end is visible sa back window. Kaya nga naasar ako dun sa XRT-695 na Honda Jazz dati.

IMHO, genaralizing is out of order as there are as many skilled and talented people in the public sector as there are in the private sector. in the same breathe that there are rotten apples everywhere, be it in government or well-established corporations. peace!

Flashing lights behind a vehicle is irritating. My case in point is assuming that the vehicle switched courteously to the passing lane, is running at the maximum allowable speeds, and/or is following a car that had just overtook like him. The Autobahn is ions away from the Philippine setting (perhaps anywhere else in the world) so, I'd rather not use it as a comparison. Here, there's a speed limit. In the SLEX, it's 80 kph so, if I overtake a vehicle, and I'm running around 80 kph, I will be irritated if a vehicle behind me that's probably running over 80 kph flashes his lights BEFORE I have the chance to get back to the slow(er) lane. Good drivers give courtesy to the vehicle in front to go back to the slow lane. 'FLASH TO PASS' to me is a gesture of conceit in this case. IMHO, if the vehicle in front decides to 'camp' in the left lane, I would pass courteously on the right. It doesnt help irritating the vehicle in front by flashing your lights. Doing that will take off a few seconds from my trip and probably consume more fuel. But, that's just me...

amen !

sorry guys, but i believe Otep and Mazdamazda are correct. it's a global rule of road courtesy to only use the leftmost lane of a highway as a passing lane, and to give way to faster vehicles, even if you're already driving the speed limit. i actually checked my Florida driver's handbook and sure enough, the rule is there.

it may only take a few seconds to pass on the right, but believe it or not, that's one of the more dangerous maneuvers to do on the highway. actually, impeding faster traffic is dangerous PERIOD. ever see a bunch of slow cars taking up all the lanes of a highway....guess what the faster drivers behind them start to do? they get impatient and start making all kinds of maneuvers to get by.

slow drivers in the left lane really need to move the **** over. it's not just road courtesy but also safety, not to mention the law in many countries.

Personally, I'm also annoyed at people who flash their lights just to assert their right of way, especially at intersections. Probably because I've seen a lot of drivers misuse it.

But as mentioned, the passing lane is there for a specific purpose -- passing, not passing and staying, even if you are running at the speed limit. When you use the right side, it defeats the purpose of designating the leftmost part as the passing lane. No matter how 'courteously' you execute an illegal maneuver, such as passing on the right side, it is still illegal. That would make two of you violating expressway regulations.

Makes sense to me. Now, if you've already expressed your intent to yield, yet the idiot behind you is still flashing indiscriminately, that's a different story.

If you're wary about flashing your lights at someone in front, you could just give a slight blip of the horn.
