JagXtrm, nice article, i've read that somewhere. Otep, i've no problem with flashing lights to indicate you want to pass. The issue here is driving with BRIGHT lights kahit same speed na kayo. Man, ang sakit sa mata on the rearview mirrors di ba? or you rarely experience this because you are driving a pajero (tall ride height)? I just find it inconsiderate na tutukan ka nang constant bright.

I drive in the NLEX everyday - as what OTEP said - it is a passing lane and not a fast lane.
Even when I am doing just between 80-90kph (tipid mode) in the rightmost lane - I can still pass many vehicles camped out in the leftmost lane. That's how slow some of these passing lane huggers are.
If you don't flash the vehicle in front of you - chances are that it won't give way, believe me. It will be just content to camp out there thinking that the passing lane is the safest route (where in fact it is not since the runoff / shoulder area is farther when you experience an emergency).

OT: WW, that was a mouthful!
IMHO, genaralizing is out of order as there are as many skilled and talented people in the public sector as there are in the private sector. in the same breathe that there are rotten apples everywhere, be it in government or well-established corporations. peace!

naiirita naman ako sa mga driver na habang red light .. eh bumababa at jumi-jingle sa gulong ng sasakyan nila .. nakakita lang ako nito sa may paseo de roxas lately .. although as much as naiiirita ako, i can feel their pain .. if you gotto go .. you gotto go ..

Flashing lights behind a vehicle is irritating. My case in point is assuming that the vehicle switched courteously to the passing lane, is running at the maximum allowable speeds, and/or is following a car that had just overtook like him. The Autobahn is ions away from the Philippine setting (perhaps anywhere else in the world) so, I'd rather not use it as a comparison. Here, there's a speed limit. In the SLEX, it's 80 kph so, if I overtake a vehicle, and I'm running around 80 kph, I will be irritated if a vehicle behind me that's probably running over 80 kph flashes his lights BEFORE I have the chance to get back to the slow(er) lane. Good drivers give courtesy to the vehicle in front to go back to the slow lane. 'FLASH TO PASS' to me is a gesture of conceit in this case. IMHO, if the vehicle in front decides to 'camp' in the left lane, I would pass courteously on the right. It doesnt help irritating the vehicle in front by flashing your lights. Doing that will take off a few seconds from my trip and probably consume more fuel. But, that's just me...

amen !

sorry guys, but i believe Otep and Mazdamazda are correct. it's a global rule of road courtesy to only use the leftmost lane of a highway as a passing lane, and to give way to faster vehicles, even if you're already driving the speed limit. i actually checked my Florida driver's handbook and sure enough, the rule is there.
it may only take a few seconds to pass on the right, but believe it or not, that's one of the more dangerous maneuvers to do on the highway. actually, impeding faster traffic is dangerous PERIOD. ever see a bunch of slow cars taking up all the lanes of a highway....guess what the faster drivers behind them start to do? they get impatient and start making all kinds of maneuvers to get by.
slow drivers in the left lane really need to move the **** over. it's not just road courtesy but also safety, not to mention the law in many countries.

Personally, I'm also annoyed at people who flash their lights just to assert their right of way, especially at intersections. Probably because I've seen a lot of drivers misuse it.
But as mentioned, the passing lane is there for a specific purpose -- passing, not passing and staying, even if you are running at the speed limit. When you use the right side, it defeats the purpose of designating the leftmost part as the passing lane. No matter how 'courteously' you execute an illegal maneuver, such as passing on the right side, it is still illegal. That would make two of you violating expressway regulations.
