That surplus-vehicles-are-dangerous spin has been used by car manufacturers to lobby for a ban for a number of years na.

their concern is their sales, not public safety.

If they are truly concerned about public safety, they should also ask the govt to ban dilapidated local used cars. Rusted, barely running 1970's/80's cars still seen on the streets. Wonder if their brakes still work. why just single out imported used cars?

they should also ask the govt to ban all vehicles assembled in backyard workshops like owner type jeeps and PUJs. Those vehicles are lightly regulated by the govt. There is no production standard. Anyone can assemble one according to his own taste and budget.

Do they undergo quality or safety inspections? Many of those vehicles are not even equipped with standard equipment. Do all owner type jeeps and PUJs come with a handbrake/emergency brake? How about signal lights and side/rearview mirrors? seatbelts? Forget airbags and crumple zones and 5kmh impact bumpers.

Point is, the car manufacturers are protecting their interests and disguising it as a concern for public safety. it's so obvious. they just single out imported used vehicles.
