December 13th, 2007 01:26 AM #1Ask ko lang possible reasons why "Check Engine" light comes on? I'm driving a 97 Corolla GLI (matic) and noticed that the "Check Engine" light turns on after a few minutes of driving. I haven't noticed anything else odd though. Pina check na sya sa talyer and ok naman daw, wala daw problema, they suggested na "pundihin" na lang ilaw kung naiilang ako. Tama ba yun?
Can anybody recommend a trustworthy shop within Las Pinas/Alabang area?

Check engine
All modern vehicle have a computer or the ECM (Electronic Control Module) that controls the operation of the car powertrain. The main purpose of this is to keep the engine running at top efficiency w/ the lowest possible emissions.
Your car computer system has self-testing capability when the computer sense that there is a problem w/ some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code in its memory and lights up the "check engine" or "service engine soon" to tell you that there is a problem and needs to be looked at.
Bring your car to the dealership or any reputable garage(shop)to hook up the scanner to the car computer to retrieve the stored trouble code(s).

when the check engine light comes on, nag-iiba ba ang takbo ng makina? Like parang pigil or sakal? If not, baka may mga loose or maduming sensors lang.
As for the suggestion of that talyer that you consulted, that was a pretty stupid suggestion and obviously they don't know what they are doing. Kaya nga may CEL (Check Engine Light) eh to warn you that something is not right with the car.
To be sure, you can go to Toyota Casa and have your ECU scanned for errors, sa Mitsu casas ballpark figure is 600-700 pesos yata ang ECU scan, I don't know about Toyotas' rate.

Eign,
Does your corolla have a computer box?
If not, belt or alternator seguro yan.

When the "check engine" light turns on while driving, the manual typically says you have to bring it to the manufacturer for check-up.
There are a few reasons why this light turns on.... One of them is that the computer box could be defective or intermittent, which means that the right mix of air and fuel is compromised. In some of the vehicles, it automatically puts the vehicle into limp mode,- meaning that you can only travel at low speed..... Do not ignore it. It could mean/result to bigger worries.

Hehehe, natawa ako dun sa suggestion na "pundihin" na lang ang CEL. Old school mechanics malamang.
Kung namamahalan ka sa casa, just go to any talyer na may OBD scanner para malaman kung anong error code ang binabato ng car mo.
Pero, its worth a try resetting the ECU, since sabi mo naman you haven't noticed anything odd.

Better have your car checked muna with CASA or shops with OBD scanners bro. I'm sure there is a reason bakit umilaw yan. CELs only light up prior to start-up ng kotse, and namamatay after ignition if everythings okay. Hanep din ang mekaniko mo hehehe. . .
Yes, i do think so. Since it's based on the 4th-gen delica/space gear, which in turn shares some of...
