Can someone please clarify? As I understand, TBN or Total Base Number refers to the alkalinity of the oil to counter the acidity of poor quality fuel (like high sulfur content of diesels) during the process of combustion & oxidation. As an example is sulfur being converted to sulfuric acid, which contributes to corrosion in the engine. The higher the TBN of the oil, the longer it's effectiveness in neutralizing the acidity during it's lifetime before it reaches 0. As an example, in the course of a 10,000 km life of an oil before an oil change, an oil with a TBN of 12 takes longer to get to 0 than an oil with a TBN of 10 or lower. So, an oil with a higher TBN give you a little more breathing room when doing extended oil change intervals.

It depends on the additive package. Some fs oils have 7tbn that can last 10000mi or 15000km. Normally api-sn only requires 7-8tbn to meet api-sn requirements. For exam mag1 5w30 fmx has tbn7.9

Where did you get this info? Completely erroneous.

For example amsoil oils have 12.6TBN across its signature range form 0w20-5w50

Shell helix ultra 5w40 and mobil1 0w40 has more or less 12TBN.

You may have asked where i got the info only, instead of adding "completely erroneous". Now may i ask where you got the amsoil and shell info to support your post?

The tbn figures above are for diesels. Tbn for api-sn are of course different and much lower. When you stated tbn figures earlier, i thought you meant them as a "set" of numbers.

Anyways amsoil and shell have product data sheets that are available

You can mix 0w20 and 5w40, there are several blenders in bobistheoilguy forums... biggest oil forums. There are also big russian oil forums.

Reps from castrol and pennzoil also say its ok...
