dieseldude,
would the engine still run even with one dead delivery valve?
as per my experience, bought a surplus ve4 pump for 5k with sprocket and idle-up. had it rebuilt and calibrated. then i had hard starting issues after the r & r. if i pump the priming pump the idle would go up. i also installed a clear hose at the suction line to see if air is leaking into the pump but no leaks. if you let it run for a few seconds without touching anything, idle is erratic. no external leaks. idle seem to go lower with each every drive so i had to adjust it. i found the problem myself after 2 visits to the calibration shop who did it. i found fuel leaking at the front of the pump when i replaced the timing belts since the belts seem to be very thin after 2 years. i thought it was only an oil seal but it turned out it was the pumps' bushing as the sprocket can be wiggled considerably even with the sprocket nut torqued to specs. funny the specialist at the shop did not see this. had the previous pump body installed with the surplus top cover and so far so good. i requested the shop to increase the idle speed to 800 rpm as the engine would vibrate wildly if i engage the transmission to drive. no offense meant dieseldude but i advise other motorists to check every nut and bolt after every r & r on your vehicles. do not simply trust the mechanic's hand. i had my idle speed screw loose after the pump replacement. just my experience.Last edited by miked; June 17th, 2012 at 02:07 PM.

dieseldude,
if you remove a pump, do you use a puller or you simply strike the pump's shaft sharply to remove the sprocket? the mechanic who did my injection pump did the latter. i hope there are no side effects to the pump as i read some manuals that striking the shaft may cause the pump to malfunction.
thanks

if you remove a pump, do you use a puller or you simply strike the pump's shaft sharply to remove the sprocket? Puller is the correct and safest way.
the mechanic who did my injection pump did the latter. I've seen some mechanics do the latter procedure as well. Their blows are controlled to prevent damage to the pump.
I hope there are no side effects to the pump as i read some manuals that striking the shaft may cause the pump to malfunction.
thanks

June 24th, 2012 11:58 PM #1748There are no symptoms which will which will warn you that injectors are due for cleaning.
There are signs that injectors need to be repaired:
1) Excessive fuel knock
2) Excessive black and/or white smoke on a good engine with a properly calibrated and timed pump, and with good filters.
Notes:
1) Failed or old nozzles cannot be cleaned.....these should be replaced.
2) Using good/original fuel filters is the best way to protect your pump and injectors.

Dieseldude, will adding a secondary filter like the ones in patrol gq prolong the life of the injectors?

June 25th, 2012 01:29 AM #1750Hi Dieseldude,
Thanks for the reply about query ko a few weeks ago. Anyways I plan to hold on to the vanette for maybe 5 years at least.
Now I'm looking for a diesel engine.
If you had a free hand to choose, which diesel engine would you pick (displacement would be between 2.0L to 2.7L)?
You have had a lot of experience on diesel engines, and which would you choose. Hope you can give me your thoughts on these.
(Of course, anyone who has an opinion to share is welcome to answer)
