Wow. Certainly been quite a storm since I looked in here.
I did a lot of double and triple checking online after we did our test. Nobody else has actually timed an automatic 1.8 Cruze online.
I did the 60-100 portion numerous times over different roads to double-check our 14.9 second time. It was consistent. The Cruze went from 0-60 km/h in 6.4 seconds (gearbox doesn't like breaking traction, shifts were very slow) and from 60-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. Manually shifted, auto-shifted, whatever, it never went from 60-100 faster than 8.5 seconds (consistently 8.5 - 8.8).
This is with the automatic, driver only, AC off and 3/4ths a tank of gas.
You can probably subtract about 1 second or so from that time because the engine was so fresh. Most new engines don't make full power until after 5,000 - 10,000 kilometers. Which would leave us with a 13.9 second time.
Still slow. The Focus Ghia does it in between 11.8 - 12 seconds.
The Focus feels like it has more low-down torque than the Cruze, but the Cruze has a better top end (though it sounds strained near redline). I can believe the 138 hp claim.
The real problem is the gearbox.
GM delayed the launch of the Cruze to fix issues with the gearbox. The way it shifted, the response, the drivetrain logic. And while it's a nice box for cruising, starting off in 2nd at low throttle inputs and slurring shifts so that they're comfortable, the shifts are incredibly slow.
There's a nearly 3 second gap between 96 km/h and 100 km/h. (I always test 0-60 mph and 0-100 km/h at the same time). Most of that gap is due to the 2nd-3rd gear shift. Each shift takes about one and a half seconds to complete.
(Many people don't realize that some publications and manufacturers just copy paste 0-60 mph times and claim them as 0-100 km/h times. They ain't even close, most of the time!)
Two shifts to 100 km/h... that's 3 seconds, plus the delay as the engine has to catch its breath again between shifts... could easily be responsible for the 4.5 second difference between the Cruze and the Civic.
Then again... I did note in my review that it wasn't that big a deal for me. I used to drive an Exalta STA... an ungodly slow car... and I like the Cruze because it gives me more luxury and space than the STA ever did, with a better ride, great handling and great build quality, all while giving more passing power than the STA. The only problem is that you really have to work around the unresponsive and indecisive gearbox to access it.

Yes, I still want to meet up with some of the Cruze guys to retest... still looking for a proper place to test and waiting for good weather... cold weather and moist roads aren't the best for acceleration testing.
A Genesis Coupe V6 6AT on a wet road does 100 km/h in 7 seconds (60 mph in 6.4)...Which ain't bad... just half a second slower than the MT... in the dry.
(V6 MT is around 5.9 to 60 mph with most mags. C&D gets 5.5, but they use SAE corrections and a 1-foot rollout, which removes 0.2 - 0.5 seconds from the total... I don't believe in 1-foot rollouts... it's cheating.
