i think the main advantage of a real gps vs smartphone is it uses an external antenna. mas madalas magka message ng gps signal lost, to think glonas na ito.

The more I use Waze, the more I find the in-car GPS pointless.

Waze's biggest advantage is that it updates your route in real-time, depending on the traffic. In Metro Manila, this is very, very important because the shortest/fastest route default in the map is almost always not the true fastest route once traffic is considered.

Another big advantage is the almost real-time updating of closed roads, one way streets, and new waypoints. Anyone living in Manila would know that the MMDA changes road rules on a whim. I doubt that the in-car/standalone GPS systems already know that Broadway Ave. is now a two-way street, or that there is a new bridge connecting the Scout area to Hemady St.

The biggest complaint that people have against Waze is that it needs a data plan because you're connected all the time. This is true if you want the real-time traffic updates, but if you're going out of town and you don't expect the traffic to be bad, you can live without it. You just need to have internet when you enter your destination, which won't take 5 minutes. Then once the route is locked, you can turn off the internet and Waze will still navigate you to your desired location. If you save the location to your Favorites, you can even navigate to that location without connecting to the internet anymore since the coordinates are already saved.

As for concerns with GPS locking, it's highly dependent on the phone. I had an old Android phone before and that took really long to get GPS signal, but my iPhone does so almost instantly as soon as I step out of the garage. My current Android phone also offers near-instantaneous connection (not as quick as the iPhone but quick enough), so I guess it's safe to say that phone hardware has improved a lot.

Battery consumption is still a pressing concern, but all it really takes is a USB car charger.

So yeah, I think that in-car and standalone GPS systems are inferior to Waze.

    Just got home from Tagaytay.

I've use navfree and it's perfectly accurate! Ang route nya is yung shortcut from my place and hindi dun sa known / default highway. My biggest worry is baka idaan ako sa one way street pero lahat ng way na pinadaan ako sakto naman!

As for gps locking, wala naman akong naging problem maybe because mataas ang Tagaytay?

By the way, I've bought SONY Z Ultra, If I'm not mistaken sya pinakamalaking screen sa android phones? 6.4 inches? Para ka na ring naka tablet at same time my phone ka na. All in one Saktong sakto for navigation use.

    fyi.

Yup meron. Just click 2D instead of 3D. I'm also not a fan of 3D maps.

    Thanks sir!

When I was in Buendia Pasay, yun position ko nasa roxas boulevard bound instead na makati bound

Pag nasa bahay naman ako, yung position nasa katabing village namin.

    Mas accurate pa yung navfree.

Really? Sa akin hindi naman. Sometimes I just load the route then turn off my 3G because I'm saving batt, accurate pa rin naman kahit purely GPS lang.

Sir pag ginamit sya offline right from the get go hindi yung mag rroute ka online then off mo internet.

Automatic routing to one of the locations saved to my Favorites. Basta nasa open road (not inside a parking complex) naglolock naman siya after a few seconds. Minsan lang hindi niya masesense kung what side of the road ka, pero once you get moving tama na.
