Which of the following compact cars has the fastest acceleration during downshifting(flooring the gas pedal)?
1. Honda Civic 2.0L
2. Mazda 3 2.0L

That would depend on where in the rev range and what gear you're in.
If you're talking about transmission response, the Civic's 5-speed is the fastest.
If you're talking about acceleration per se... the Mazda3, Altis and Focus are all similar... maybe differing by a tiny bit, depending on the car condition. They all have good low-rpm torque and a swelling midrange. The Altis 2.0 feels breathless at high rpms, though, and has an annoyingly low rev-limiter.
The Civic, I haven't driven one for a long time... low-rpms not as good as the others, but the mid-range and high-end of that motor are incredibly impressive. The 2.0S MT was faster than the Focus TDCi in a drag race, but they don't sell it anymore... just the 5AT.

March 14th, 2010 12:16 PM #3Hmm, interesting question. I wonder why local car companies seldom publish acceleration times in their brochures? 0-100 and 80-120 times should also be published alongside fuel economy ratings... just a thought

*sir niky, thanks for the info.

Got your point also, if these technical figures are already written
in brochures, there is no need to test these acceleration data on
actual roads.
Usually Civics are the ones bullying my Mazda 3 in EDSA. And they don't
need to do that if they already know that theirs has better accelaration IMHO.
Or maybe those few Civics bullying me just want to have a drag race!Last edited by lamborghinione; March 14th, 2010 at 06:41 PM.

To note: the Civic 1.8 5AT has the same or better performance than the 2.0s you've listed.
Civics, whatever variant they are, are really strong cars in terms of acceleration and handling performance. The only car in the segment that's faster than them (now that the Civic 2.0 MT is gone) is, again, the Focus TDCi.

April 28th, 2010 05:50 PM #8Yeah the 1.8 and the 2.0 has almost similar 0-140KPH times because of the gearing of their tranny. Although the civic is very very fast, i really don't like overtaking with it. The throttle-by-wire lag (plus the a/t lag) plus the very anemic low RPM power makes (adds another second or two in the response time when i have to rev it up to higher rpm or to downshift) it hard for me to overtake in a lot of situations, i still prefer a diesel car or the low end grunty altis when i need to overtake a lot. The civic is still a joy to ride on free wide road.

That's because 0-100 km/h is moot in everyday driving. It's good only for bragging rights, nothing more.
The 80-120 km/h acceleration figure is much more useful...but to be truly useful it has to be timed though the gears (on a manual-transmission car) or on kickdown (for an automatic).
How long will a car take to accelerate from 80-120 km/h in
5th gear - ?
4th gear - ?
3rd gear - ?
2nd gear - ? (if still applicable)
That's how it should be done.
