im fortunate enough to be able to drive both the fortuner and the alterra. paved and off road.

verdict: for a one and a half million pesos, fortuner - 9
    alterra -- 5

Chen, your right that fortuner has coil and should translate to better ride quality but have tried riding a fortuner? and compared it with an alterra....

I have, both driver and passenger portion, and I vouch for what mazda mazda said. ride quality is firmer and Alterra has better bump absorbency whereas Fortuner has a "bouncy" ride. This is by stock comparison, no mods, no softer tires, etc...

Its the suspension setup that makes alterras ride better. Its like comparing mazda3, altis and civics suspension, although lahat naman sila ay coil, meron sa kanila mas maganda ride dahil sa suspension setup. I know its comparing coil and leaf here, but try them both, I believe your going to see alterras ride to be better......pero masyado talagang mahal, if they could have priced it lower than Fortuners.

tatlong beses ko nang na test drive yung fortuner... hindi naman bouncy yung ride. it's much closer to the innova's ride than to the hilux's abominable clomping.

yung alterra naman parang hindi naman kasing-smooth as some people say. parang ganun din sa fortuner.

i dunno, that's my honest evaluation. baka out of calibration na yung pwet ko hehe :D

You can't be sure of that, kung Japan made siguro no comment ako pero since Fortuner is made in thailand, malaking question mark yan pag dating sa reliability. Sorento is been in the market since 2002 so may proof na ang performance at reliability. Dami pyesa kasi dali masira. Ganyan gawa nila siguro para di halata sirain vehicles nila

The badge does not make the car. If you are just keeping the car from 5-15 years, it doesn't matter kahit anong brand, basta local release, there will be parts for it.

Toyota is a safe choice if you need an appliance car. But as per my experience, Toyota ownership is not exactly a guarantee of hassle free living. I've had better experience with a Ssangyong and my former Kia. The only 'Yota I like is the LC80. That's it.

The vehicle has to prove itself. Not the badge that's tacked on its nose. Even Daihatsu's are Toyota derived with minimal changes. Maybe if they were badged as 'Yotas, Daihatsu would still be with us today (because most people look at cars as badges on wheels). But we're getting OT, here.

Sorry OT: Okay lang mag recall but not 880,000 vehicles! I think that's too much for a well known brand. It only shows that Toyota reliability is going down and the Koreans ( KIA and Hyundai ) progressing.

Back to the topic.

The MU-7 would have been a better choice for the local market.

it only shows that mas marami ang may tiwala sa toyota talaga! kaya siguro 880,000 units, dahil mas marami naman ang bumibili ng toyota

i agree hype lang isuzu diesels the best diesels locally. a product of a common notion in the 80's na karamihan ng trucks, jeepneys, buses eh running an isuzu engine. pati nga taxi noon isuzu gemini eh hehehe

nowadays, dapat comfortability or "it ride likes a car" must be taken into consideration and seems like the Innova and the Fortuner and the Hyundai's perfected it more.

it's true kahit pa head to head mas reliable ang old isuzu diesel engines compared sa iba. yung fouling injectors talaga namang problema yan sa lahat especially if you use unclean diesel. look around and ask all jeepneys kung ano gamit nila makina.

Ive heard No Problems so far concerning Alteras IQTEC engine. But i've heard several problems concerning toyota's D4d engines (including my officemate's)
